The adulation
reached fever pitch for Ferrari in China. At the brand new Shanghai circuit, the
Ferrari Maserati Group was the guests of honour.
Formula 1 will touch down for the first time here on 26 September for the
Chinese Grand Prix.
In front of over 35,000 spectators, 70 Prancing Horse and Trident vehicles laid
down the first rubber on the track. The cars were driven by their proud owners
who hailed from all over South East Asia.
Then it was the turn of Gerhard Berger – for six seasons a Ferrari driver - in
the Drivers’ and Constructors’ championship winning F2003-GA. The growl of the
car’s engine was matched by the roar from the crowd as the Chinese crowd
followed the Austrian’s five laps were great enthusiasm.
In the main stand
were gathered the top brass of modern Chinese society. They had come to witness
the opening of what, maybe a little immodestly, has been dubbed the ‘greatest
circuit of all time’.
The fans looked on as Jean Todt, flanked by dignitaries from the local and
central Chinese government, FIA and FOM representatives, thanked the supporters
for the warm welcome. He also praised the circuit, designed by the specialist,
Hermann Tilke.
Ferrari and Maserati mechanics shared the pit lane facilities as above them a
huge screen projected the debut of the Maserati MC12 Stradale to the throng. The
new model was driven by Andrea Bertolini. Alongside him in the cockpit was new
Maserati CEO, Martin Leach.
As if that were not enough, Luca Badoer also took the Enzo for a spin. The
Chinese driver, Tengyi Jiang, had a fabulous day out and took the wheel of a
Maserati Trofeo in which he will compete in some European meets.
