The official citation for the award was 'for the innovative pre-treatment and paintwork that is unique in Europe, comprising nanotechnological pre-treatment of the bodywork, cataphoretic primer, powder-based undercoat, water-based paint and a transparent 'ceramic' lacquer'.

The ecoTOP 2004 award is particularly significant as this is the first automotive application of the technology.

The entire paint cycle of Maserati's flagship model from pre-treatment to the final phase has a low environmental impact.
