Sailing under her new
banner, the maxi yacht, Maserati, has made an
impressive start in her maiden race in the 11th Canon Big
Boat Challenge.
The magnificent racing yacht, which brings the Trident
marque's name firmly to the attention of a whole, new,
prestigious audience, finished in a gallant second place in
the PHS Division.
Skippered by Ian “Bugsy” Potter, the Maserati handled
the tricky conditions well, and was beaten by
Sydney-to-Hobart hopeful, Sean Langman’s AAPT.

In third position was former CYCA (Cruising Yacht Club of
Australia) Commodore, David Fuller, aboard his harbour
racer, Bashful.
The Canon Big Boat Challenge is one of the most prestigious
events on the CYCA’s racing calendar.
It is one of Sydney’s most spectacular sporting and harbour
fixtures and marks the beginning of the countdown to the
60th anniversary Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, which will
take place on Boxing Day (26 December).
Over the past fifty nine years, the Rolex Sydney Hobart has
become an icon of Australia’s summer sport, ranking in
public interest with such national events as the Melbourne
Cup horse race, the Davis Cup tennis and the cricket tests
between Australia and England.
No yachting event in the world attracts such huge media
coverage – except, of course, the America’s Cup and the
Whitbread Round the World Race – than does the start on
Sydney Harbour. And they only happen every four or five
years.
