Ferrari yesterday
officially presented its new model, the 612 Scaglietti, at the 16th
International Detroit Motorshow. The car was designed by Pininfarina and carries
the name of Sergio Scaglietti, the coachbuilder from Modena who worked alongside
Enzo Ferrari in the widely successful early years and creator of some of the
most stunning Maranello motorcars.
"For the first time on a 12 cylinder Ferrari the construction is entirely in
aluminium, from the chassis to the body, with a 60% increase in the
rigidity/weight ratio. The 12 cylinder V-engine is the synthesis of the most
advanced Ferrari motor design technology, with a maximum power of 540 bhp at
7,250 rpm", commented President Luca di Montezemolo.
The US was selected for the launch of the new model as 2004 marks 50th
anniversary of the first Granturismo Ferrari in North America. The US is still
the biggest market in the world for the Prancing Horse. During the meeting with
press, Montezemolo declared that 2003 had been a very positive year for Ferrari,
both on the commercial and sporting fronts. The results in the United States
were particularly good with 1,350 vehicles delivered, 13% up on 2002.
"Today we are in Detroit to fly the flag for our country", concluded the Ferrari
president. "This is something that we will try hard to carry forward as it will
signal great trust in Italy". |
