The 2004 Paris
Mondial de l'Automobile closes its doors later this afternoon after a two week
run. For Alfa Romeo, this has been an important showcase for their rapidly
growing, exciting model line-up.
At, what is this
autumn's most important global motor show, thirteen cars have been presented on
a stylish, modern stand, finished in simple, classy red and silver colours.
The large stand
has been carefully laid out. With its minimalist touch, it has allowed attention
to be focused on the modern-looking range offered by the sporty Italian brand.
Headlined by the
newly facelifted Alfa 147, and featuring masterpieces such as the 8c
Competizione concept, Alfa Romeo's collection has been a strong focus of
attention with the show's never ending stream of visitors.
Two of the new
Alfa 147 hatchback's, both 3-door's, take centre stage: one is a Selespeed
version finished in silver, while a second is presented a light metallic grey
colour scheme. With its eye-catching new, larger headlights, a visually stronger
front spoiler, a carefully reworked rear end, and numerous under the skin
tweaks, this cute car has now grown up.
Two of the four
wheel drive Crosswagon Q4 models, first seen in Geneva, are also prominently
displayed. One of the two Crosswagons, both of which are fitted with the powerful 1.9-litre M-Jet diesel, is
mounted on a raised dais next to the 8c. Its a prime location, emphasising Alfa
Romeo's ambitions for the car.
Behind the car,
mounted at an angle, is a cutaway of its engine, suspension and transmission.
The neat and compact four wheel drive arrangement, with its ingenious with Torsen C-system differential that continuously modulates torque distribution
between front and rear axles according to grip, is laid bare.
Finally, as a giant backdrop, a huge TV-screen pumps out endless footage of the
Crosswagon Q4 powering its way through, mud, snow and other rigorous terrains.
The glorious 8c
Competizione concept sits bang in the middle of the stand, and without doubt
this car grabs the attention. Despite it being a year since the covers first
came off it at the Frankfurt IAA, this concept sportscar has not lost an ounce
of its appeal, and is comfortably one of the sporty stars of the show.
Alfa Romeo have
in recent years embarked on a policy of presenting their cars at shows in rather
dull-appearing silver and grey colours, finishes which fail to bring the best
out of the cars. Fortunately however, the 8c Competizione's designers realise
that Alfas are meant to be red. And thus, gleaming, aggressive, like a wild
beast about to pounce, the 8c Competizione stands out from the crowd. To look at
it is to see the marques fabulous history before your eyes: every curve, every
line embodies the marque's fabulous traditions.
The new GT Coupe is represented by a 3.2 V6-powered version in 'Selective' trim,
a 166 executive saloon is also present, powered by a 2.4 JTD engine with
Sportronic transmission, while a Spider, the venerable convertible still looking
as gorgeous as ever, is presented in 'Selective' finish with a 3.2 V6 engine,
and an eye-catching red leather interior.
Aside from the
two Crosswagon models, the recently Giugiaro-facelifted 156 is represented by a
Selespeed transmission-equipped saloon, in 'Selective' trim, and a 2.4 JTD
powered Sportwagon, the latter fitted with the TI option package.
The Alfa 156
'Super Touring' racer that Autodelta are currently running in this year's FIA
European Touring Car Championship, provides the sporting link that is embedded
in the marque's philosophy. It is the same model as the car that last Friday
powered outgoing champion Gabriele Tarquini to a double victory in the closing
races of the season at the brand new Dubai Autodrome.
Finally,
providing a link to their glorious past, the cute little Giulietta is present,
as this historically important model wraps up celebrations of its 50th
anniversary.
Sometimes major manufacturers bring significant older models to motor shows in
an effort to give a fillip to their current range. This can never be said of the
evocative Guilietta. A really beautiful little car, it belies its half century
age. It is a genuine attraction in its own right.
So a glorious
past, a burgeoning range that has been stylishly freshened up over the last
year, continued racing success, and a show-stopping sporty concept that leaves
visitors crossing their fingers that it will be built, are all celebrated in one
of Alfa Romeo's strongest show line-ups for many years. The future certainly
looks to be exciting for this famous name.
