Michael
Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello finished first and third in the Canadian Grand
Prix but four hours after the end of the race, the race result was changed
promoting the Brazilian to second place. As the lights went out on the grid, Ralf Schumacher led the field away from pole position, followed by fellow front row man Button. Trulli made a good start but immediately retired the Renault with transmission failure. Behind them came Alonso, Montoya, with Michael Schumacher and Barrichello maintaining their sixth and seventh grid positions. Further back, Klien tipped Coulthard into a spin and the Jaguar then collided with team-mate Webber who had to pit with a puncture. By lap 3, Ralf led by 2.3s with the same order maintained behind. Michael and Rubens, using different types of Bridgestone tyre were able to match the pace of the others comfortably, even though they had more fuel on board as the only front runners having a strategy based on two rather than the more common three refuelling stops. On lap 7, while
Ralf's lead was now 2.5s, Barrichello passed Raikkonen for sixth place and
immediately set a race fastest lap. On lap 11, Coulthard pitted the McLaren as
the first of the three stoppers to refuel. Michael and
Rubens headed the field for the first time when Alonso came in on lap 17, while
Raikkonen was given a drive-through penalty for crossing the pit lane exit white
line. Barrichello, carrying slightly less fuel than Michael made his first stop
on lap 18, one lap ahead of his team-mate. Montoya led the
trip to the pits for the second run on lap 30, with Button stopping on 31
promoting Michael to second. On lap 33, Ralf, 12 seconds ahead came down pit
lane which left the two Ferraris running nose to tail at the front of the field.
There then ensued a thrilling duel between the two red cars that had the crowd
on the edge of its seat. From lap 60 the
order looked set with Michael leading his brother, Rubens third, Button fourth
being chased by Montoya, Fisichella sixth after Raikkonen had to pit for a new
steering wheel. On lap 63, Massa had a big accident at the hairpin but avoided
serious injury, and from then on the order remained the same to the flag. |
