Another Michael
Schumacher victory is not exactly something new this year, after all this was
his twelfth.
Indeed even Rubens Barrichello ensuring that Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro took
another one-two is not really headline news as it was the seventh of the season.
However, the significance of today’s performance is that the Scuderia has
clinched this year’s Constructors’ Championship title with five races still to
go. Not only is this the team’s 14th title, it is also the sixth in a row.
There are not many F1 records remaining for Michael Schumacher to beat, but set
another one today, as his twelfth victory of the season means he beats his own
record for the most number of wins in a year.
Adding icing to the Ferrari cake is the fact that, as from now, only Michael or
Rubens can take the Drivers’ crown, thus ensuring the Scuderia does so for the
14th time, the fifth in a row.
There is very
little to say about the race itself as, in keeping with tradition here, there
was virtually no overtaking after the start.
Schumacher and Barrichello maintained their first and second grid positions at
the start, pursued by the Renault of Alonso. Behind came Montoya, Button and
Sato.
Virtually the
entire field was on a three stop strategy and Alonso and ninth placed Fisichella
were the first to refuel on lap 10. Barrichello, Montoya, Button, Trulli and
Coulthard all came in on lap 11 and the race leader made his first stop next
time round, keeping his lead as he rejoined.
The only moment
of drama for the Scuderia occurred when the team noticed there was a slight fuel
leak from the refuelling rig.
Parts were changed as a precaution but there were no further problems during the
remaining pit stops which took place as follows: Barrichello (on laps 31 and
50,) Schumacher (on laps 32 and 51.)
The Ferraris were
setting an untouchable pace and by lap 22, third placed Alonso was already 22
seconds behind Schumacher.
With one lap remaining to the chequered flag, the Ferrari crew prepared a
pit-board message which read “World Number 1.”
It certainly
looked like it on a weekend when the red team did the grand slam, securing both
front row places on the grid, scoring maximum points in the race and Schumacher
taking the race fastest lap.
Behind Alonso,
who joined the victorious duo on the podium, while Michael and Rubens hoisted
Jean Todt onto their shoulders, only two other drivers, fourth placed Juan Pablo
Montoya and fifth placed Jenson Button finished on the same lap as the winner.
The remaining of the points went to Sato's BAR, Pizzonia's Williams and in
eighth place, Fisichella's Sauber.
