20.09.2004 "We feel we have reduced the gap behind the leaders this weekend and the cars gave significant signs of progress" DAMS FIA GT race report from Oschersleben

The Lamborghini Murcielago driven by Piccini and Deletraz turned an impressive performance during the first 2 hours of today's race but was stopped by a broken driveshaft.

The three hour race had started in wet conditions, a situation which Andrea Piccini and Beppe Gabbiani found they were competitive in.

Piccini had quickly moved up to 11th place by the time the team decided to stop him to fit slick tires. Back down in 19th place after the stop, Andrea did a fantastic stint, lapping among the five quickest cars on track.

When the team decided to pit again due to a safety car period, number 24 car had just entered the top eight. The progression of the car in the classification continued with Deletraz at the wheel.

"At this moment we were in 6th position", explained Eric Boullier, Technical Director of DAMS, "As the two cars in front were only 15 seconds ahead we had modified our strategy in order to save some time in the pit stops, we decided to change only the rear tyres and to reduce the amount of fuel put in the car, it should have made the difference and put the car in 4th place. But instead the driveshaft broke at this moment and the car was out of the race."

The car of Gabbiani and Ortiz finished the race in 18th position, which does not reflect the performance put in by Gabbiani who managed to set very good lap times. But the two drivers could not drive with the consistency they expected and a puncture cost to them precious time.

"We feel we have reduced the gap behind the leaders this weekend and the cars gave significant signs of progress," Eric Boullier continued, "We have still a lot to do and the Team remains focussed on the development the Murcielago."
