Today, the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza hosted the first races of the 2004 Ferrari Maserati World Finals.

The event brings the Group’s racing season to a close and ends on Sunday 31st October with a demonstration by Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, that will see four F2004 cars on track, driven by Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello, Luca Badoer and Andrea Bertolini.

Also on Sunday, in the final race of the Trofeo Vodafone Maserati Europa, the two crews who gave the MC12 its FIA GT championship debut, Bertolini/Salo and Herbert/De Simone, will start from the back of the grid, with two Trofeo Gransport, the version of the car which will be used for the 2005 one-make series.

Over 900 cars from both marques, a mix of road cars and competition vehicles will be at Monza as part of the event.

Worth singling out are the six cars that have won the F1 world championship from 1999 to the present, as well as 19 historic single-seaters and six 333 SP, run by the Maranello F1 Clienti department.

Today’s programme included timed sessions for the Shell Ferrari Maserati Historic Challenge, the Trofeo Vodafone Maserati and the Ferrari Challenge Pirelli Trophy. Following that came the first races for the championships featuring the 360 Modena Challenge.

In the Italian Ferrari Challenge Pirelli Trophy, victory went to pole man, Nicola Cadei (Rossocorsa), who crossed the line ahead of Matteo Malucelli (Motor/Malucelli) and Fabio Santaniello (Team Maranello). Cristian Francescon (Forza Service) was victorious in the Shell Cup race for gentlemen drivers.

Excitement and spectacular action characterised the race that saw competitors in the Europe and USA Challenge 360 cars take to the track at the same time.

First past the chequered flag in the sprint race was France’s Ange Barde (Ferrari West Europe Organisation,) ahead of Ireland’s Paddy Shovlin (Rossocorsa) and the Czech, Robert Pergl (HP-Exclusive.) First of the North American finishers was Douglas Peterson (Shelton Ferrari) who was sixth overall.
