Andrea Palma took
the victory in the fourth round of this season's Trofeo Vodafone Maserati Europa
2004, held at the Hockenheim circuit as a curtain raiser to Formula One's German
Grand Prix.
The driver from Rome, took the lead during the second stint of the race, after
the compulsory pit stop.
Until the pit stops, Francesco Ravasio and Diego Alessi had been leading, but a
couple of mistakes caused them them to drop right down the leaderboard.
Second overall, six seconds back, was Alberto Cerrai, who was thirteen seconds
ahead of the third placed Sergio Rota.
After suffering spin at the first corner, Rota fought back admirably, overtaking
the Swiss duo Hans Notter and Max Cattori during the last lap, to grab the final
podium slot to make it three Italians on the podium. Fifth overall went to
another series pacesetter, Luca Frigerio.
German journalists Heiko Wasser and Franz Koenig met Niki Lauda after practice
to receive advice, while Juergen Schramek and Michele Goesele, special guests at
today's race on board the VIP cars of sponsors Pirelli and Zegna, finished the
race.
In the championship classification, Palma extends his lead to 79 points, and now
leads Cerrai by eight points. Next up are Notter and Cattori who have 57 points,
ahead of Rota with 49.
The next round of the Trofeo Vodafone Maserati Europa 2004 will take place in
Italy at Imola on 5th September, alongside a round of the FIA GT Championship.
