07.08.2004 The FIA released their own statement as the controversial Maserati MC12 was provisionally passed to race on a "non-homologated basis" in the final three FIA GT series races

The FIA released their own statement yesterday as the controversial Maserati MC12 was provisionally passed to race in the next round of the FIA GT Championship at Imola on 5th September.

The FIA have announced that the MC12 will race on a "non-homologated basis" with the next scheduled meeting of the World Motorsport Council making a decision on its eligibility based on the evidence collected from the three closing races.

In an effort to bring the MC12's performance into line with the current pacesetting FIA GT series machines: the Ferrari 550 Maranello and 575 GTC, as well as the American Saleen S7-R, the car's huge rear wing will become narrower, while the right to impose immediate restrictions will be retained.

FIA, 06.08.2004: "With the unanimous support of the participating teams, the Maserati MC12 will be authorised to take part in the next three rounds of the FIA GT Championship (Imola, Oschersleben and Dubai) on a non-homologated basis.  The car will not be eligible to score Championship points.

In order to ensure that the MC12’s performance is in line with cars currently competing in the Championship, Maserati have agreed to reduce the rear wing width to accord with the windscreen dimensions. The FIA will also be free to impose changes of restrictor dimensions or weight ballast at any point in the three meetings.

Data from the car operating in race conditions will be collected and assessed by the FIA and the results will be presented to the FIA World Motor Sport Council in October when the question of the homologation of the car is decided."
