22.07.2004 James Thompson, who has been drafted into the AutoDelta line-up again for Spa next weekend, will also join the factory Alfa Romeo team later in the season at Oschersleben AND Dubai

After his dominant win in the first race at Donington Park last month, James Thompson will return to the FIA European Touring Car Championship at Spa next weekend, once again to reinforce the AutoDelta team.

This will mean that there will be four factory-entered Alfa Romeo 156 Super 2000 cars to face the massed ranks of BMW, in a further attempt to remedy a situation which at present sees the red cars’ drivers trailing their German-entered rivals.

Thompson’s addition will hopefully prove to be a crucial for boost to Gabriele Tarquini and Fabrizio Giovanardi in their fight for the title, as the Briton will work, together with young Brazilian Augusto Farfus, to support the pair, who are currently fourth and fifth in the Drivers’ Championship.

Thompson will also be part of the AutoDelta team again at Oschersleben on 19 September and Dubai on 8 October.

However he most probably miss the next meeting of the ETCC at Imola on 5 September, as it will clash with his British Touring Car Championship commitments at Snetterton the same weekend.

“James did such a good job for us at Donington, just like he did last year in Estoril and Monza
. We are delighted to have him back in the team,” team manager Monica Sipsz declared.

The Belgian weekend foreshadows as a busy one for Thompson, who will fly back to England on Saturday after the races to marry his long-time girl friend Vicki.

Three private flights, two in helicopter and one in a private jet plane, have been arranged for bringing him from Belgium to Yorkshire in time for the wedding.

“The races are at lunchtime, and the ceremony at 5pm. I should do it with one hour to spare,”
Thompson commented.
