Fiat
Automóveis
has presented the Fiat Idea - visually similar to
the European version - but under the skin a very
different car.
The
B-segment Fiat Punto-based Idea 'Mini MPV' first
went on sale across Europe during late 2003. The new
car - which combines compact external dimensions
with a very spacious interior - was almost the first
of a new segment breed, with only GM's Mervia (badged
in Europe as a Vauxhall or Opel) for company. The
Idea (the acronym stands for - Intelligent, Design,
Emotion, Architecture) offered a very economical
vehicle, with strong a host of class-leading safety
features, innovative seating positions, and a sense
of style, while at the same time exuding a solid,
study image.
Externally
the Brazilian-built Idea model is very similar to
the European version. However the wheelbase, the
suspension, the engines, the headlamps and another
components have been developed by the
Brazilian-based engineering team. The most visual
outward differences include a new brushed chrome radiator
grille, the headlamps which feature clear-lens turn
indicators units, while the round foglights which
are positioned in the front bumper. Continuing the
chrome theme started by the front grille, the side
door rubbing strips include chrome inserts, and a
similar chrome strip runs across the tailgate's
lower lip.
Inside the Brazilian Idea, the dashboard has been
drawn from the locally-developed Fiat Palio range,
with the two main instruments clusters are finished
in chrome surrounds. The rear seats divide into two
and can form tables - a feature that has proved
popular with Stilo customers' in Brazil.

Emphasising the 'upmarket'
pretensions that Fiat
Automóveis- the Brazilian arm of Fiat Auto -
have for the new Idea and options package which includes
a Skydome roof, sensors (for rain, dusk and parking), a
CD/MP3 player, Hi-Fi sound system, and Bluetooth.
Two petrol
and alcohol-mixing 'Flex Fuel' engines are
being offered with the Fiat Idea. 'Flex Fuel' is
becoming hugely popular on the Brazilian market, with
estimates that around half of all cars being sold this
year will offer this option. Fiat
Automóveis introduced a GM-sourced 1.8-litre Flex
Fuel engine last year (although Fiat have a Magnetti
Marelli developed system, rather that using GM's Delphi
arangement), and in May of this year - building on the
market trend - Fiat Powertrain Technologies (created out
of the split between the Fiat and GM Powertrain joint
venture)
introduced a 1.4-litre Flex fuel unit.
Fiat Idea Engine
specifications:
1.4-litre 8V Flex 80 bhp (P) 81 bhp (A); 12,2 kgm
(P) 12,4 kgm (A); 1.8-litre 8V Flex
112 bhp (P) 114 bhp (A); 17,8 kgm (P) 18,5 kgm (A).
