Malaysian Alfa Romeo distributor Sime Darby Auto Italia Sdn Bhd, is set to add Fiat to its portfolio, as it prepares to open its Northern 3S centre in Penang at the end of the year. Sime Darby have already opened a new showroom in Juru Auto City (on 1st September), which is located just a short distance from the 3S facility. This weekend (Oct 15 and 16 between 11am and 6pm) Sime Darby will hold their first public test drive event at the new showroom, building on the success of a similar event held at the other showroom at Glenmarie. “Based on consistently high number of visitors to our showroom to date, we believe we can capitalise on the pent-up demand for Alfa Romeo cars in the region," commented Auto Italia managing director Radzi Zainol in a statement.

The Northern 3S (sales, services and spares) at Juru Auto City, Penang, will begin operations in December. (A new showroom will open the same month in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, and together the investment is worth around RM4.5 million).  “The 3S centre in Penang will have a built-up area of 10,000 sq ft. The showroom will be able to display six cars while the service centre with eight work bays and the latest diagnostic tools and equipment, can cater to 12 cars at any one time."

Sime Darby Auto Italia is now importing and selling six different Alfa Romeo models, the 147 hatchback, the 156 sedan, the 156 Sportwagon, the high performance 156 GTA, the 166 lage executive sedan, and the sporty Alfa GT Coupé,
which range from RM185,000 to RM351,000 in price. The firm expects to sell around three hundred units by the end of this year. Sime Darby Auto Italia took over the franchise rights from Milan Auto Sdn Bhd, who held the import rights for thirteen years up until mid-2003, at which point Fiat Auto removed them.

Zainol firmly believes the new facility will boost already growing interest in the Alfa Romeo brand in Malaysia. The Penang facility will be the company's second, joining their headquarters, located at Shah Alam, in Selangor, which cost RM2.5 million to set up. “The facility in Glenmarie features two separate display areas that can accommodate up to 10 cars, a spare parts and service centre that can cater to 22 vehicles at any one time," added Zainol. Sime Darby Auto Italia will then spend an additional RM8 million in 2006 setting up new dealership facilities in, Ipoh, Johor Baru, Petaling Jaya and Seremban.

Meanwhile Malaysia's Daily Sun newspaper reports that Sime Darby - the parent company of Sime Darby Auto Italia - is set to add Fiat and Citroen to its list of its import franchises. As well as Alfa Romeo Sime Darby also distributes BMW, Ford, Hyundai and Land Rover.
