Maserati is a partner in the realisation of
the exhibition entitled ‘Fangio - Cuando el Hombre es mas
que el Mito’ (‘Fangio – When then Man is more than the
Myth’). The exhibition will run from 1 to 30 October in
Modena, at the old Manifattura Tabacchi building. It is
supported by the Comune di Modena, the Provincia and the
Chamber of Commerce and forms part of the ‘Modena Terra di
Motori’ (‘Modena – Land of Engines’) annual event. Images
and objects related to the five-time world Formula 1
champion Juan Manuel Fangio will be on display. He won his
last title in 1957 in a Maserati 250 F and is considered one
of the greatest drivers of all time. The exhibition is being
held on the tenth anniversary of his death.
In order to fully evoke the talent of the great Fangio and
demonstrate Maserati’s great passion for racing, the House
of the Trident has decided to include in the collection of
memorabilia at the exhibition the wooden and aluminium
steering wheel from Fangio’s Maserati 250 F. Also present
will be the winner’s drape that enveloped the World
Championship trophy handed to the Argentine driver when he
topped the podium at Nürburgring in 1957.
Juan Manuel Fangio and Maserati will be forever linked in
motor-racing epic. In its ninety year history, Maserati has
collected almost five hundred wins and a countless number of
category placements. Between 1949 and 1957 Fangio and his
Maserati scored the wins that secured the legend of the
Trident marque. There were victories in San Remo, Marseille,
Perpignan and Pau in 1949 with Fangio at the wheel of the
Maserati 4CLT/48 and then the winning of the world title in
1957 driving the 250F. This was Fangio’s fifth world F1
title.
After this win and at the peak of its powers, Maserati
decided to retire from competition. It continued to supply
its clients with cars and engines in the years that followed
with success coming in all sectors of competition. Fangio
won in the Maserati in other races too, some in the Sport
category: the Grand Prix of Pau in the 4CLT/48 in 1950, the
Grand Prix of Modena on board the A6GCM in 1957, the Grand
Prix of Portugal, the Grand Prix of Cuba and the 12 Hours of
Sebring.
Since then, Maserati has always been the true to itself and
transferred the sporting soul and technological research
acquired from the racing world to Gran Turismo. Those
features go along with the exclusivity of Maserati cars and
traditional attention to detail typical of Italian
craftsmanship. This year Maserati has already won the
Constructors’ Cup in FIA GT Championship a long way before
the end of the season, thanks to the four MC12s fielding the
Team Vitaphone and JMB.

Further, the Trofeo GranSport
continues to set top performances in the Trofeo Maserati in
Europe and Brazil.
The
exhibition is developed along several thematic lines,
including:
Simply Fangio: an overview on his private life, from
the strong relationship to his family and birthplace to his
life with Andreina, to his personal passions, such as the
passion for westerns.
Fangio as a mechanic: before becoming an
internationally renown champion, Fangio was a real mechanic:
already at 10 years of age he spent much of his time at the
workshop of Señor Capettini in Balcarce; then, after having
completed his school career, at 19 he opened his own
workshop. A deep knowledge of the mechanical aspects allowed
him to take personally care of almost all his race cars,
even when he could count on a team of expert mechanics,
always available to him.
Fangio as a driver: The most famous moments
in the life and career of Fangio, from the beginning in
Argentina with the long stock-car races to the world-wide
success, thanks to 5 world championship titles, which were
long unequalled, and many GP victories on different
circuits.
Fangio and his friends: From affectionate
admirers or mere fans to childhood friends who escorted him
also on the track, to the relations to Alberto Ascari and
Marcello Giambertone, his agent and the co-author of his
autobiography: congratulations and memoirs of those who were
close to him during the victories as well as through hard
times.
Fangio and Modena: The special relation
between the champion and the city of Modena, from the races
on the circuit to the trophies won with the Modena racing
teams, from the special relationship to Enzo Ferrari, the
Drake, to the contemporary images collected as evidence of
the period Fangio spent in Modena. A special section devoted
to the host city, with Fangio’s memoirs connected to it, may
be set up for each future location of the exhibition.
