The jury at the 20th International Car Festival has awarded Sergio Pininfarina the "Palme d’Or", which will be presented tonight at the Hotel Ritz in Paris during the closing ceremony of the event.

The following motivation was given for the award: "For this twentieth edition of the Festival the jury wished to pay tribute to a particularly outstanding personality active over the past two decades: without a doubt Sergio Pininfarina is an apt choice. His prestigious name has been associated with some of the most attractive contemporary bodywork designs, but also with several magnificent commercial successes."

Sergio Pininfarina graduated in mechanical engineering from the Polytechnic of Torino in 1950, he began his career in the family firm, “Carrozzeria Pinin Farina”; in 1960, he undertook the responsibility of General Manager of the firm; in 1961 he became also Managing Director and in 1966, at his father’s death, he took over the Chairmanship of the Company

In 1961, the President of the Italian Republic, Giovanni Gronchi, changed by decree the name Farina in Pininfarina. From 1974 to 1977 he has been professor of “Car Body Design” at the Polytechnic of Torino.

During his more than fifty years of work, the Pininfarina Group has enjoyed a constant increase in technical and production development.

Pininfarina Engineering Centre

On October 14 2002 Pininfarina inaugurated the new Engineering Centre. It stands in 12,000 sq.m. over 6,000 sq.m. of which is built on, and enhances Pininfarina capabilities, enabling the Company to offer engineering services on the market alongside its traditional styling and design skills.

The company's turnover has increased 95 fold, from 8.2 million of Euros (650 million Lire of that time) to 779 million of Euros; the units produced of 82 times (from 524 to more than 43.000); the number of employees his more than quadruplicated (from 560 to more than 2400). At now it has several plants, in Italy and abroad.

One of the other awards made by the jury, chaired by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte and F1 champion Alain Prost, concerned the "Supercar of the Year" category – a triumph for the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti designed by Pininfarina.

For 20 years the International Car Festival's aim has been to pay tribute to beautiful cars in the most unexpected and, indeed, audacious creative sectors, although the maximum recognition – the "Palme d'Or" – has only been awarded previously on four occasions: in 1997 to Alain Prost, in 1998 to Nigel Mansell, in 2003 to Jean Todt and Michael Schumacher and in 2004 to Carlos Ghosn.
