02.07.2005 15TH ITALIA A ZANDVOORT: WE LOOK BACK AT one of HOLLAND'S leading SUMMER ITALIAN CAR WEEKENDs

The weekend from 18 and 19 June represented the annual ‘Italia a Zandvoort’ at Holland’s most famous motor-racing circuit. The Italia a Zandvoort program includes an interesting mix of races on the track and a presentation of beautiful Italian cars in the paddocks. This event simply makes mouths water, and this year being the 15th edition was no exception.

The Italian theme was underlined by the fantastic weather, and seeing that Zandvoort is on the Dutch coast, the roads leading to the circuit were already jam-packed in the morning by beachgoers. This unfortunately did not aide to the circuit’s accessibility, certainly for older cars that were not designed to be driven in modern-day traffic!

At first sight upon entering the circuit, each car enthusiast received an enormous smile on their face! Such characterful cars all lined up urging further inspection and oozing beauty! It was clear to all that diverse marque clubs and official importers had planned carefully to make the best of the weekend. But it is naturally the best to see such wonderful cars in action, and of course this happened.

The racing fan could enjoy historic Ferrari Formula Classic Series, just as well as popular Italian classics in action. Races held also included the Alfa Romeo Challenge, and diverse clubs got the chance to demonstrate their cars at full speed on the famous track.

The pits were also open during the races, whereby it was possible to get closer to the action and enjoy the buzzing excitement.

Two of the most special cars present at the event came from the Alfa Romeo factory: a restored Alfa Romeo 33/3 racing car and the exceptionally special Alfa Romeo 156 Silhouette. In the latter car, the driver sits in the middle of the cockpit. During the demonstration of these two racing masterpieces, an old Maserati Formula 1 car also took to the circuit producing amazing aural qualities. The sheer speed of these machines was exceptional, and created a vivid contrast to the many Fiat 500 Abarth’s that were also on the track enjoying the experience.

All in all it was a great day, despite the previous years perhaps showing a greater turnout. It simply couldn’t be any other way, but every Italian car enthusiast had a fantastic day at sunny Zandvoort!
