The Bologna Motor Show is playing host to a sparkling array of concept cars and prototypes, thanks to the second edition of L'auto che verrà (the car that will come). The display is organised by Promotor International in collaboration with the monthly Quattroruote magazine, and backed by the prestigious support of the Gruppo Carrozzeria Anfia, the Italian coachbuilder organisation.

The second edition of “L'auto che verrà” presents the theme “mobility of the future”, and is located near Pavilion 21 where the concept cars of nine great Italian automotive design companies are presented.

Lorenza Pininfarina, President of the Gruppo Carrozzeria Anfia, described the significance of the motor show display as follows, “The Bologna Motor Show has been recognised by OICA as the official Italian Motor Show. It’s evident that in this scenario, an organised presence of the Italian automotive design companies is particularly important. Bologna is a young appointment that involves over one million car enthusiasts. Thanks to the engagement of the organisers, which were backed by the sponsorship of the Gruppo Carrozzeria Anfia, the display of prototypes this year is particularly aimed at young people, curious by nature, anxious to understand how an automobile is born and in what direction the automotive future lies. Enticing young people to the world of design is primarily a cultural operation. It means getting them involved and making them aware of their responsibilities in choosing more intelligent means of transportation that combine emotion and rationality.”

Autostudi A-Trix

The A-Trix is a modern electric tricycle, alternatively powered by an internal combustion engine, and displays three fundamental concepts for mobility: compactness, active and passive safety. The compact dimensions are similar to those of a maxi-scooter, with active safety guaranteed by the enclosed cell-like bodywork which is cradled in a patented swinging chassis. The passive safety of the three wheels permits the body to lean into corners, keeping the driven wheels securely on the road. The vehicle can be motorised with petrol engines ranging from 50 to 125 cc, or with a brushless electric engine. Unlike standard electromotors, the brushless electric engine does not require electrical contacts sliding on the motor shaft to work, nor does it involve higher mechanical resistance, while it is virtually maintenance free. Dimensions of the A-Trix are compact: length 1165 mm, width 800 mm, weight 60 kg and the braking system is integral on the three wheels. The A-Trix is also equipped with a GPS navigation system, Hi-Fi and palmtop computer.

Bertone Birusa

The Birusa is based on the mechanicals of the BMW Z8, which maintains the 400 bhp V8 engine and aluminium chassis with an increased length of 300 mm. The concept is packed with the latest technology: a voice controlled opening sunroof, infrared visor for driving in the dark and a Segway in the boot for inner-city travel. The name is derived from the adjective “biross” (pronounced “biruss”), which in Piedmont dialect means a very brilliant and resourceful person.

Bertone Jet 2

The Jet 2 represents tailor-made coachwork, realised on the base of the Aston Martin Vanquish. In modern times, the Jet 2 represents a legacy to the historical tradition of the greatest Italian coachbuilders.

Carcerano New York

Displayed as a 1:3 scale model, the New York was born from the desire to penetrate the heart of Italian culture. The aim of this project was to truly give concrete shape to “Italian style”, considered not as a pure taste for things beautiful, but as an expression that integrates the strength of culture within products. In this sense, New York stands out as an aesthetic workshop.

Fioravanti Vola

The 2001 Alfa Romeo-branded Vola is an open top sports car with a new concept of revolving roof. Named by Fioravanti as the LF, the roof is an extremely innovative and simple solution. Instead of folding under the bodywork, the roof locates itself above the boot with obvious advantages in terms of essentiality, weight and luggage capacity over contemporary folding hardtop designs. The roof rotation axis coincides with that of the boot. The LF roof concept made its production debut on the Ferrari Superamerica at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year.

The Citroen C6 Lignage is a high-bracket saloon concept car which previewed the production Citroen C6 model back at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1999.

I.DE.A Institute Gobi

The 2005 Gobi concept is a styling study for a compact multipurpose vehicle combining the features of a city car with those of an off-road vehicle. Dedicated above all to youngsters, it can be easily transformed from a 2-seater pickup into a 4-seater. Thanks to its extremely versatile characteristics, this is an unusual solution in terms of design and function, capable of provoking excitement. The Gobi is conceived for a light and low-consuming engine, but with the option of engaging four-wheel drive.

Pininfarina Rossa

The Pininfarina Rossa is a 2-seater spider based on Ferrari 550 Maranello mechanicals. It was made in 2000 to celebrate Pininfarina’s 70th anniversary, and won the “Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance” of that year. This concept car, a real open-top supercar, was also elected concept car of the year during the "Concept Car of the Year Awards" staged at the Palais du Louvre in Paris. The Rossa has formed the stylistic basis for Ferrari’s modern-day lineup.

Stola Maybach Exelero

The Exelero, made for tyre manufacturer Fulda, is an original supersports show car (nearly 6 metres long) harking back at Fulda’s original aerodynamic Maybach test coupe from 1939.  The styling was realised by students of Pforzheim Polytechnic's Design Department, together with input from the Design Department of DaimlerChrysler AG.
