Renato Cattalini
comfortably won the second round of the Maserati Trofeo
Brasile, which was held at the Nelson Piquet circuit.
The Panama driver took the win from Alencar Jr and Joćo
Adibe, who had won the opening race at Interlagos. Cattalini
had appeared very competitive from the opening test
sessions, even without ever giving the impression that he
was fully exploiting his car's potential. This feeling was
confirmed in the warm-up where Cattalini came in fifth.
The race passed off without incident, unlike the first round
at Interlagos. Still, the crowds enjoyed the spectacle on
the track and the superb comebacks of Alencar Jr and Joćo
Adibe.
The pre-race favourite, Francisco Longo, was overtaken at
the start by Maurizio Billi and, over the following laps,
lost ground and positions. Alencar Jr, on the other hand,
had begun to make his way up the field from his eleventh
place on the grid. Joćo Adibe was tracking close behind him.
As Cattalini extended his lead, the battle behind him grew
ever more intense with Hermann, Longo and Derani all
involved. Alencar Jr made his final push on lap seventeen
and gained four more positions to finish the race in fifth
behind Cattalini, Billi, Lunardi and Hermann. Joćo Adibe
crossed the line in seventh place.

The second leg was a reflection of the first with Alencar Jr
and Adibe able to make up ground and finish on the podium.
The Parana driver came home second behind an uncatchable
Cattalini.
The event over, Cattalini revealed that "it is a
fantastic sensation! I take part in the Trofeo Brasile to
enjoy myself but winning is even better. It has been a
perfect weekend and the car was incredible".
Alencar Jr was involved in the most exciting moments of the
race along with Cattalini and Adibe. He stated that he "was
pleased to have not made a mistake. I was patient from start
to finish".
Joćo Adibe was satisfied with his podium finish but less
pleased with the performance during qualifying. "I tried
to conserve the car a little in the first half of the race
but I did all I could to obtain a good placing in the second
half".
The general Trofeo Brasile classification sees Joćo Adibe in
the lead with 75 points. Alencar Jr comes next, some seven
points down and, thanks to his win at Brasilia, Renato
Cattalini moves to third place on 66.
The next Trofeo Brasile race will be held at the Nelson
Piquet autodrome in Rio de Janeiro on 22 May. |
