The second round of the Trofeo Vodafone Maserati Europa, held in conjunction with the Spanish Grand Prix, was won by Italian Alberto Cerrai, who came ahead of Swiss duo Hans Notter and Max Cattori, followed by Rob Wilson, racing under the Union Jack colours.

Cerrai, who had started fourth, behind Marc Gené/Maria De Villota, Francesco Ravasio/Diego Alessi and the Anglo Italian duo Jodie Kidd/Ivan Capelli, was quick to make the most out of an accident which happened at the very start of the race when three cars collided. The safety car was called out, while the marshals were clearing the track from the debris. With 13 minutes on the clock and the safety car still on the track, the round of compulsory pit stops began. Once the safety car had pulled in, Diego Alessi and Scuderia Ferrari F1 test driver Marc Gené immediately upped the pace. Their quickest lap times dipped under one minute and 54 seconds.

Unsurprisingly, the first to make their stop were the drivers who race alone for the entire competition. Marti managed to sneak past Cerrai in this section of the race, thus leading the race as Gené, Capelli and, lastly, Alessi, gave up the drive to Maria De Villota, Jodie Kidd and Francesco Ravasio respectively.

The battle for the podium positions was between Benedetto Marti, who led, Cerrai and Cattori. In fourth and fifth were Brits Joe Macari and Rob Wilson. Marti and Cerrai were engaged in a tense duel, which cost Marti the race leadership and ultimately the race.

In the closing stages an error by Macari cost him two places. At the chequered flag it was Alberto Cerrai to take the honours. He was followed by Hans Notter/Max Cattori, Rob Wilson, Andrea De Megni, who had raced consistently, and Joe Macari. He maintained fifth spot despite Maria De Villota's brave fightback.

Cerrai leads the general classification with 45 points. Notter/Cattori are on 33, and Wilson 27.

English supermodel Jodie Kidd, at her fourth motor race (the second this season), counted several high profile supporters, including Martin Brundle who was on hand to give Jodie advice while lining up for the race start. After the race, ITV1 reporter Ted Kravitz interviewed Jodie: "It's a big learning curve for me; we came 15th, which for a race like this with a lot of accidents, was okay. Ivan was really quick yesterday, and managed to get the third fastest lap after just three laps, so I could get a bit more time behind the wheel, as it was my first time here at Montmeló. It's a fantastic track, really fast, with very demanding corners. I was quite nervous, as all the grandstands were absolutely packed with Fernando Alonso's supporters, but then once I put my helmet on, I didn't think of anything else but racing!"

Another well known face in the Trofeo paddock, was that of Tetsuya Harada, former 250cc Moto GP World Champion. He will be racing alongside GianMarino Zenere for the remainder of the season. "I know this track inside out," said Tetsuya, "but the lines you take on a motorbike are very different from the way you drive when you're on a car. We were very unlucky this time as our car was involved in an accident right at the start, but I look forward to race in Imola, another track I am very familiar with."

The Maserati Trofeo GranSport is the racing version of the Maserati GranSport. Built at the Maserati factory in Modena on the same production line as the GranSport, the Trofeo was designed to offer the driver an easy-to-drive car capable of stirring the emotions on the race track. The 4200cc V8 engine produces 415 bhp and coupled to the six-speed gearbox from the standard road car it allows the driver to make the most of the power without compromising the torque. The ride height has also been reduced by 50mm.
