Alfa Romeo has expanded the range of the
Alfa 159 with the introduction of an entry level 1.8-litre
petrol engine. The 1.8 MPI engine, which is offered on both
the Alfa 159 saloon and Sportwagon, is now available for
order in some markets. Production of this new model will
commence in week 28, as of 10 July 2006. This all-new
16-valve engine will be offered with the Progression and
Distinctive trim levels, as well as the low-priced
Impression entry-level specification.
With 140 bhp (103 kW) on tap at 6,500
rpm, and 175 Nm of torque at 3,800 rpm, the Alfa 159 1.8
offers respectable performance. The saloon is capable of
topping 206 km/h, whereas the heavier Sportwagon is slightly
slower at 204 km/h. The 0-100km/h sprint is reached in 10.2
seconds for the saloon and 10.4 seconds for the Sportwagon.
Fuel consumption is particularly
agreeable at 7.7 litres/100 km (combined) for the saloon,
and 7.9 litres/100 km for the Sportwagon. Carbon-dioxide
emissions of this entry level engine are also relatively low
at 181 g/km for the saloon and 187 g/km for the Sportwagon.
