Fiat Auto South Africa in conjunction with the City of Johannesburg (Region 10 Sports & Recreation Department) will host the inaugural Fiat School Games 2006 which will take place tomorrow at the newly completed Fiat Sports Centre in Meadowlands, Soweto. The Fiat Sports Centre, developed over the past three years, now boasts facilities to host athletics [including high jump and long jump], soccer, netball, basketball and volleyball.

In the first-ever Fiat School Games, 14 schools will participate in the five sporting codes. (Eleven local schools will be joined by three invitation schools from Limpopo, Eldorado and Alexandra.) Over 1200 children - all kitted out in uniform - will participate in the games with more than 100 officials and organizational staff presiding over the day. Equipment to the value of R55 000 such as balls, chronometers, and whistles will be made available for use on the day. 3600 meals will be provided throughout the event with over 4 000 bottles of liquid refreshments for the participants. 400 medals will be presented with each participant receiving a certificate, confirming their participation in the event.

The Fiat School Games is a way to celebrate the transformation of what was essentially a rubbish dump, into a first-class sports’ facility. This amazing transformation was made possible thanks to the generous support of a number of Italian Companies including CTM (Ceramic Tile Market), Marble Classic and the Associazione del’Amicizia. In addition, the support Fiat has received from Iveco, Magnetti Marelli and Jaz Logistics has been fundamental to launching these first school games.

Mr Giorgio Gorelli, Managing Director of Fiat Auto South Africa, said that Fiat is very proud to be associated with an event like this that "fosters the talent of young people in such a positive way."
