It was from the Amazonian forests
on the 6th August that the team of eleven intrepid
explorers left Minas Gerais, Brazil, the home city
of Fiat Automòveis' huge manufacturing factory,
heading off on the Conexão Adventure
(Adventure Connection) with its the destination the
heart of the great Inca Empire. With twelve thousand
kilometres in front of them and a mission to rescue
800 years of history in six major countries of Latin
America, the team checked their equipment, revised
their cars and stamped their passports. To guarantee
security during the trip GPS (Global Positioning
System) equipment and micro filming cameras had been
installed in the interiors of the four Fiat
vehicles, each drawn from the durable, rugged "Fiat
Adventure" range. So after one and a half years of
detailed planning and preparation the Conexão
Adventure set out en route for Peru, at the
centre of the Inca civilization.
On the 7th August the intrepid team crossed the
Brazil-Peru bridge on the route to the city of
Iñapari. On Peruvian soil they had lost no time in
sampling the local cuisine and drinks, including
Cusqueña, the most famous of the many fine Peruvian
beers, and Pollo con Papas, a traditional dish of
chicken served with potato fries. In Puerto
Maldonado they tried for the first time the famous
cocoa tea, that is well known for diminishing the
effect of the altitude. Despite the pre-event
precautions several members of the team were not
ideally prepared in terms of physical condition, in
response to the four thousand metre altitude of the
mountain range of the Andes.
After four days of hectic travelling the Conexão
Adventure arrived at the former capital of the
Inca Empire, Cuzco, which is located at 3,300 metres
above of the level of the sea. The first ruin to be
visited by the team was Pillacta, followed by the
Temple of the Sun Inca, Koricancha, the current
Church of Saint Domingo, constructed by the Spanish
in the 16th century. The rock with 12 angles,
located in the wall of the Inca Palace, Roca, is
famous for the complexity of the architecture which
was used in its construction, and it graphically
serves as a very visual demonstration of the
advanced building techniques of the Inca
civilisation.
In the Sacred Valley, located
between Cuzco and Machu Picchu, the team filmed
important archaeological complexes which were left
by Incas. Amongst them is the Fort of Sacsayhuaman,
built using rocks that weigh around 100 tons each,
and the Tombomachay Temple, which was the place used
for the cult of the water.

The images captured by the team will be used in the
production of a documentary at the end of the expedition. It
was during a millenarian Inca ritual that the team had the
closest contact with the local culture. Led by master
guardians of the Andean tradition, the ritual was concluded
with a ceremony of offering to the mother land. The group
also witnessed the astronomical phenomenon during which the
shade of the sun, occurring over a spread out symbol,
reproduces the face of a Inca man. During this occasion part
of the team were baptised and received native names.
Leaving the Sacred Valley in direction of Pizac - where the
giant agricultural terraces are one of the prominent
features of the beautiful landscape - they had visited a
traditional fair of handcraft work and tried typical local
food. There they traded - just like in the past - by
exchanging goods. The journalist on the team, Sid Marcos,
swapped his coat for a wall carpet while other members
exchanged their tour shirts for caps of the region. They
also filmed the production of "Chicha", a traditional drink
from the Inca culture which is made from corn. Corn is the
main product cultivated on the terraces and can be formed of
different types depending on the temperature at which it is
grown, which varies with the altitude of the terrace. The
variety of the corn and its quality make Pizac the most
appropriate place for the consumption of the drink in Peru.
From Cuzco the team left for Puno, where during a three day
visit, they will film the region of Titicaca. From Peru they
head to Chile for the production of a set of documents in
the Atacama desert. The trip will then arrive at Argentina
for filming in the Humauaka. Before arriving back in Brazil,
the group will stay for one day in Paraguay and will then
cross the Brazilian border at Foz do Iguaçu. The arrival of
the Conexão Adventure back in Belo Horizonte is
scheduled to take place on 7th September, after 30 days of
the Latin American trip.
