The Fiat Auto
plant at Termini Imerese in Sicily has hit the a total of
four million cars manufactured.
The Sicilian
factory set this new record with a Lancia Ypsilon MomoDesign
in the red and black colour combination. A party was held
yesterday with all the factory's employees to celebrate the
event, during which the car was delivered to its new owner,
Mr Fabrizio Quartararo from Palermo.
It was back in
April 1970 when the Termini Imerese plant started to
manufacture the original Fiat Cinquecento. In the following
years many other successful models have rolled off its
assembly lines including the tiny two-seat, air-cooled 126,
the original Panda, which saw over two million units of the
iconic 1970s model being built at the Sicilian plant in
almost fourteen years, and starting from 1993, the first two
generations of the Fiat Punto 'supermini'.

Since last year the Termini Imerese factory has been
the sole Fiat Auto plant to manufacture the Lancia
Ypsilon, and it is expected to be the home of the
next-generation model which is due to arrive next
year. |

The Fiat Auto plant at Termini Imerese in Sicily,
which began assembling cars in 1970, has
manufactured its four millionth model, a Lancia
Ypsilon MomoDesign (above: the Ypsilon MomoDesign at
the European Motor Show held in Brussels last
month). |

In recent years the plant was threatened with closure as
Fiat wound down Punto production, but the recent switch of
assembly of the Lancia Ypsilon range there, a car that has
proved to be hugely popular particularly with Italian buyers
since it was introduced three years ago, has safeguarded the
plant's future. Since last year the Termini Imerese factory
has been the sole Fiat Auto plant to manufacture the Lancia
Ypsilon, and it is expected to be the home of the
next-generation model which is due to arrive next year.
The Termini
Imerese plant covers an area of over 400,000 square
meters, 160,000 of which are covered, and employs
approximately 1,400 people.
