Sydney’s Maserati representative, Italia Motori, invited more than 300 owners to help welcome three unique Maseratis to Sydney, two brand new and one a true legend.

The legend was the Maserati 250F, fresh from a return visit to Albert Park and the Melbourne Grand Prix. On its first visit to Melbourne, 50 years ago, Stirling Moss guided it to an historic win in one of Maserati’s great events. This time it was driven by its owner, Peter Giddings, who has spent more than 30 years treasuring this classic car and ensuring it continues to be used for what it was designed: racing.

The 250F is the epitome of a classic front engine racing car and is as beautiful today as when it first took the race track in 1954. As the 250F was being positioned in the showroom, it literally stopped traffic in William Street and dozens of people came to showroom window to photograph one of the world’s most famous racing cars.

Sharing the Maserati showroom at Italia Motori were the two latest interpretations of the Maserati legend, the very first Maserati GranSport Spyder to arrive in Australia and the equally unique Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT. Unlike the 250F, though, the two new cars will soon be joined by identical cars as both models are set to boost Maserati sales in Australia.

“It doesn’t take an expert to see the link between the Maserati 250F and our latest models,” explained Maryanne Dalziel, Maserati’s National Marketing Manager. “Just look at the nose on the 250F.

"Its shape and prominence are clearly reflected in the Quattroporte, while both our new sedan and the GranSport Spyder share the same flowing lines of the 250F. I would have to say, though, while the 250F and the Spyder are both open top cars, the GranSport is rather more luxurious!”

Peter Giddings, who has owned this particular Maserati 250F for more than 30 years, surprised many visitors to the Italia Motori event by explaining just how often he uses the car. “I have actually worn it out three times! We have now rebuilt the car each time and it has done far more miles with me than it ever did with Maserati,” explained Mr Giddings. “It is a clear indication of the quality and purity of the original design that 50 years on the 250F can still be used routinely and regularly, something it shares with the modern Maseratis.”

Tony Graziani, Dealer Principal of Italia Motori, was clearly moved by the presence of the 250F. “This is clearly one of the highlights of my career,” he said. “The 250F is a true legend, it is the definition of Maserati, and it has made Maserati a byword for performance and style. To have one in the showroom is very special, but to have one that has played such integral role in the history of motorsport in Australia is just an extraordinary experience.”
