03.07.2006 FERRARI RACED TO A CRUSHING 1-2 FINISH IN INDIANAPOLIS AS MICHAEL SCHUMACHER CLAWED BACK SIX VITAL CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS

Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa scored an historic and resounding one-two for Ferrari at the United States at Indianapolis on Sunday. Starting from the front row of the grid, they were scarcely headed throughout the 73 lap, and received a fantastic reception from the packed grandstands. It brought Michael's tally of victories to five at the Brickyard, a first time achievement for any racing driver. Significantly, it meant that only Bridgestone has ever won the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis.

The temperature was around 38 degrees as the race got under way, but Michael was beaten off the line by teammate Massa as they went down into the first corner where he was also challenged by Renault's Fernando Alonso. Fisichella grabbed fourth place from Rubens Barrichello. But there was chaos in midfield and at the back, as two separate accidents claimed eight cars, including both McLarens, local hero Scott Speed, Nick Heidfeld who was unhurt after rolling, and Jenson Button.

As the safety car came out, Massa led from Michael, then Alonso, Fisichella, Barrichello, followed by Jacques Villeneuve, Ralf Schumacher, and Nico Rosberg from the back of the grid. When the safety car went in, Michael Schumacher stuck to the back of his teammate, while the Renaults gradually dropped away. Barrichello and Ralf were close behind and were soon joined by Villeneuve while Rosberg, with a heavy fuel load, dropped away and was soon overtaken by Trulli, who was much happier with his heavy fuel load.

By lap 15, Michael Schumacher was beginning to drop back behind Massa. Fisichella's pressure on teammate Alonso told when the Spaniard was a little slow out of the final corner and Fisichella was easily able to overtake down the straight, moving into third place, but over seven seconds behind the second Ferrari. Alonso was soon caught by Barrichello who brought Ralf and Villeneuve with him, the quartet being caught by Trulli who had left Rosberg far behind. The Williams driver had the battling David Coulthard and Tonio Liuzzi close behind. Albers completed those still running.

Barrichello was the first to pit on lap 24, at just the same time as Villeneuve retired with engine failure from seventh place. The pit stops began in earnest five laps later, when Michael pitted first from second place on lap 29 and put on new tyres. Fisichella pitted at the same time. Massa pitted a lap later, and the combination of used tyres and a slipping clutch meant he emerged just behind Michael, who took the lead when Alonso pitted on lap 31. Michael now led by 2.4s from Massa in second. The yet-to-stop Trulli was in third place, while Fisichella was fourth from Alonso. Ralf Schumacher had overtaken Barrichello in the pit stops. It was just after half distance that Trulli pitted, rejoining behind Barrichello in seventh, but all of those ahead would be making a second stop. Liuzzi also pitted, leaving Coulthard to concentrate on catching eighth placed Rosberg.

The two-stoppers began making their second stops around lap 49, Barrichello pitting first, while Massa pitted on lap 52, Fisichella and Ralf on lap 53, Michael on lap 54 and Alonso on lap 55. The most significant point about the order was that Alonso was now in sixth place, behind the two Toyotas, both Ferraris and Fisichella. But as Ralf was being caught by teammate Trulli, the German driver suffered a wheel bearing failure, which caused him to retire with just ten laps to go. Michael's lead came down from 14s to 8s in the closing stages but he won easily from Massa in second place. Fisichella was third from Trulli scoring points again. Alonso salvaged fifth with Barrichello sixth. Coulthard was seventh while Liuzzi's eighth place meant Scuderia Toro Rosso scored their first World Championship point. Rosberg was the only other finisher. Michael's victory means that Alonso lead in the championship is now 18 points, while Ferrari have reduced Renault's lead by eight points to 26 points.

It was the third win and first one-two finish of the season for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro and the all-time twelfth overall win for the Prancing Horse in a Grand Prix held in the United States.

Michael Schumacher spearheaded a Ferrari 1-2 at Indianapolis as the red cars ran away and hid from their opposition. As Schumacher clawed back six valuable points of the 25-point deficit to Fernando Alonso, he became the only man to win five big races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

It was the third win and first one-two finish of the season for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro. This is the twelfth win for the Prancing Horse in a Grand Prix held in the United States, the sixth at Indianapolis, number 186 from 733 races. For Michael Schumacher this is his eighty seventh win from 242 Grand Prix starts, the fifth at this circuit.

Jean Todt: "We have been dreaming of a result like this for a while now and finally it has come. After an extraordinary qualifying yesterday, we knew that if all the pieces of the jigsaw - reliability, consistent performance from the Bridgestone tyres, the work of the drivers and the team - fitted together, we were capable of getting the job done and that's what happened. After the strange 2005 race, run in circumstances that we don't want to go over again and won by Ferrari on a Technical Knock Out, today we repeated the result by being superior to all our rivals. This is the best possible start to the second half of the season and a one-two finish is a further encouragement to tackle the eight remaining races in the best possible way."

Michael Schumacher: "I am very happy! It was a great weekend: first with Germany in the semi-final, then Italy, pole position yesterday and now this great victory today! We had prepared very well for these last two races, but for some reason, in Canada we were unable to demonstrate that fact. Here however, we have been strong since the start of free practice on Friday, in part due to the Bridgestone tyres. We have made up six points which are important for the championships and we want to keep moving forward this way, fighting, pushing to the maximum and trying to win every time! Now we go back to Europe where we will try and continue to fight back. I want to thank the whole team who did a marvellous job!"

Felipe Massa
: "It was a fantastic race for us, in which we showed that the championship is not yet over. The team has done an incredible job this weekend. Everything worked well, especially the Bridgestone tyres. The start went very, very well for me and I managed to pass Michael. I had a very strong first stint, but he managed to pass me during the first pit stop, when I had a clutch problem which slowed me, but I was still motivated to fight hard for second place to give the team the maximum number of points from this race. First and second is a fantastic day for us and an important day in my career."

Ross Brawn: "Everything went to plan today. It all felt good, especially on the tyre front, from the first day when they already delivered the grip we needed. We had seen some tyre graining at first, but this disappeared in the race. In fact the Bridgestone tyres were perfect and they allowed us to have an easy weekend and an easy race. The team and drivers did a great job. Put all those elements together and you get a performance like the one we saw today.

"We had a few races where it went the wrong way and today the momentum came back to us in a substantial way. I was surprised at the gap to the Renaults, but I don't think this is an indication for the future. I think the remaining races will be much closer. Now we have to keep the impetus going: in Magny-Cours, good tyres will once again be important and we will also have some improvements to the car that I am optimistic about."

Race Result - Michael Schumacher: 1st 1:34:35.199 73 laps chassis 254; Felipe Massa: 2nd + 7.984 73 laps chassis 252; Temperatures: air 35/37 °C, track 43/49 °C
