At the Centro Sportivo Milanello
Fiat has delivered a 500 to the Italian national
football coach Roberto Donadoni in celebration of the
Azzurri's qualification for next summer's European
Soccer Championships which came last weekend following a
hard-fought win away in Scotland. Donadoni's 500 is a
100 CV 1.4 16v Sport version.
Italy's
qualification for next year's European Championships
came last Saturday thanks to the will and determination
of a united group of football players, a real team that
knew what they wanted. A team that won for the first
time in Scotland, that made practically no mistakes;
with the coach Donadoni making all the right
substitutions at the right time; with Toni scoring the
1-0 goal after one minute and ten seconds and with
Panucci scoring the 2-1 goal, scoring the goal of a
lifetime.
The objective was reached after an unforgettable
evening. Italy dished out a football lesson and Scotland
showed what real fans are like, a situation that
everyone was hoping for. The Azzurri went on the field
with a mourning band on the arm and the desire not to
lose: at Hampden Park, with about 2,300 Italian fans in
the stands, the team was on the field to play a decisive
match, ninety minutes of in or out of the European
Championships. Donadoni lined up the best Italian team,
only Materazzi was missing: Buffon, Panucci, Cannavaro,
Barzagli, Zambrotta, Pirlo, Gattuso, Ambrosini,
Camoranesi, Di Natale and Luca Toni.
The players wore the team new jersey for the occasion,
all white like their shorts with the number in black and
the collar in gold, the away match uniform that debuted
in the most important match of the season. Italy showed
determination and character and immediately showed what
they wanted to do and where they wanted to go: a cross
by Di Natale, and Toni scores on an external
right-footed kick sending the ball right by Gordon. One
minute and ten seconds, and the Azzurri are ahead in
Scotland. But not only. The Scottish risk taking in
another goal two minutes later with Camoranesi, but the
ball goes high.
The team coached by Donadoni is lining up well, pressing
and starting off fast. On 31', the referee Mejuto
Gonzalez, annuls a valid goal by Di Natale after a
signal from his assistant. And the first half ended with
a yellow card for Luca Toni and Pirlo blocking a header
by Weir on the undefended net. Italy runs some risks but
controls the match.
In the second half, Italy immediately attacked; on 4'
Gordon saved from Di Natale, Camoranesi got the rebound
but his header ended up high. On 14', Zambrotta tried to
cross, and Gordon was forced to make a save. On 18'
Scotland took advantage of a free kick with Buffon
blocking but not holding the ball and Ferguson scored
the 1-1 goal, offside. This time Gonzalez, who had
annulled a valid goal in the first half, validated the
offside goal. And the stadium fired up. Donadoni sent
Iaquinta on for Di Natale. Scotland tried to score and
Italy was in difficulty. Chiellini in for Camoranesi, De
Rossi in for Gattuso. Five more minutes of suffering,
with the Azzurri trying to "defend" a result that meant
qualification. On 43', Panucci tried a header but the
ball did not go in the net. But the second goal was in
the air: and on 46', Panucci deviated a free kick by
Pirlo. And Italy flies to the European Championships.
There was still on match remaining to be played midweek,
but it was unnecessary, the FIFA Football World Cup
winners were through to the 'Euro 2008' finals.
