Lamborghini's new stealth fighter-inspired Reventón has gone up against an Aeronautica Militare Italiana Panavia Tornado in a unique test of acceleration: supercar versus jet fighter.

The extreme new one million euro Reventón supercar, is based around the powerful V12-engine and well-sorted chassis of the Murciélago Lp640, but featuring brand-new sharp, angular and very distinctive looks drawn by the designers in Bologna Sant'Agata from the shadowy 'stealth fighter' shape of the US Air Force's F-22 Raptor, along with touches such as the camouflage grey-green interior, aluminium fuel filler flap, and fighter aircraft inspired electronic display cockpit instrument cluster.

The aggressive-looking Reventón was unveiled to the world at the Frankfurt IAA in mid-September, where it was one of the show's biggest stars; and just 20 units are to be built. The name Reventón was chosen according to Lamborghini tradition. Reventón was a fighting bull, owned by the Don Rodriguez family. It is included in the list of the most famous bulls ever and is known for killing the famed bullfighter Felix Guzman in 1943. All 20 units were sold out prior to the German show.

The Panavia-built Tornado to be delivered to the Aeronautica Militare Italiana (Italian Air Force) made its maiden flight 32 years ago, and they eventually delivery of some 100 IDS versions. Since then the planes have seen active service in the first Gulf War and in the skies over Kosovo, and have in recent years been upgraded.

The challenge that would pit Reventón against Tornado took place on Thursday at the Italian Air Force's base at Ghedi, near Brescia, which has a 3 kilometre long runway, ideal for the side-by-side 'drag' race. It came about courtesy of Generale di Brigata Aerea Carlo Landi, head of the 5th Reparto dello Stato Maggiore dell’A.M., and colonnello Aurelio Colagrande, who is the comandante del Sesto Stormo. In the showdown the Reventón took an early lead against the Tornado thanks to its 0-100 km/h time of 3.4 seconds, but just as the Lamborghini was reaching its top speed of 340 km/h and with a few meters of tarmac remaining, the jet fighter had left the tarmac and was passing over its roofline.
