					Selected students
of National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, India, will have
the opportunity to work on projects with the designers of
Ferrari cars, Pininfarina, Italy in their design studio for
a period of at least a month, beginning at the end June. This is
the Italian company's first collaboration with an Indian
					institute.

					The National Institute of
Design (NID) is internationally acclaimed as
one of the foremost multi-disciplinary institutions
in the field of design education and research. The
institute functions as an autonomous body under the Ministry
of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. NID is
recognised by the Dept. of Scientific & Industrial Research
(DSIR) under Department of Science & Technology, Government
of India, as a scientific and industrial design research
					organisation.

Pininfarina, which has worked with major automobile
companies including Ferrari, Maserati, Cadillac, Volvo,
Nash, Peugeot and Jaguar among others, had signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NID in February this
					year.
The joint initiative will kickstart with a visit by one of
the chief designers at Pininfarina in May which would
establish the ground for further research activities with
NID. Later in the year, there would be exchange of faculty
from NID and officials from Pininfarina for mutual
					interests.

This comes on the back of the institute's efforts to
establish industry-academia relations with major automobile
companies in the world for its course on transportation and
					automobile design.
In the last few months, NID has entered into alliances with
top companies including Renault, General Motors, Reva,
Mahindra and Mahindra and TVS. The collaborations, which
vary from joint research and design projects to interactions
with the students are part of the institute's efforts to
bring in more practical exposure for its first batch of
two-and-half-year postgraduate course in Transportation and
Automobile Design (PGDPD) which commenced in 2006.

"From Pininfarina's side we will get insights into the
latest technology and methods of design while they would be
able to understand the the socio economic, cultural and
ecological and environment contexts of transportation design
in the country," said Pradyumna Vyas, Co-ordinator, PGDPD.

Since the institute has 17 design multi-disciplinaries,
collaborations with automobile and transportation companies
will be open to students other than the automobile design
					course as well.
"For students from other branches like product design, this
would be another opportunity to work with the best companies
in the industry since they share the common background of
design, " said Vyas. Based on the response of the industry
to the first batch, the institute plans to hike the student
intake from 8 to 10 from the second batch onwards starting
from June this year. Last year, the institute had over 15
faculty inputs per semester which includes existing faculty
members of the institute as well as visiting professors from
					India and abroad.
Visiting faculty, which mostly consists of working
professionals in the automobile sector have evinced interest
in interacting with participants on a regular basis and this
could culminate into sponsored projects once the students
enter the final phases of their course, added Vyas.
