16.03.2007 FERRARI FASTEST IN FRIDAY PRACTICE AS GRAND PRIX SEASON GETS UNDERWAY IN MELBOURNE

The city of Melbourne is supposed to be in the middle of one of the worst droughts in its history and therefore the organisers were not even allowed to water the park and Albert Park therefore looked a bit yellow when the teams arrived. However, out of the blue, the humid weather broke late on Thursday night and so the first practice session of the year was held on a damp track. This meant that the high number of laps predicted for Friday, now that engines are free and four sets of tyres are allocated specifically for this day, did not materialise until the afternoon session when the track finally dried. In total the drivers get 180 minutes of track time now and although there is just one tyre manufacturer now, with Bridgestone supplying its Potenza tyres to all teams, drivers and engineers still have to assess both types of dry weather tyre to see which one to use for most of the race. Why only "most of the race" and not all of it? Because in a new rule that adds spice to the strategic decisions in the race, each driver must use both types of tyre. This will mean that most will opt to run their best tyre choice at the start and then work out how few laps to complete on the second type of tyre.

Felipe Massa completed 39 laps of the track today and finished up with the fastest time, just under four tenths quicker than his new team-mate, Kimi Raikkonen, who ended up second, having driven one more lap than the Brazilian. Third fastest and attracting a lot of media attention as he is both new to Formula 1 and is also the first black driver to compete in the sport, was Lewis Hamilton in his McLaren Mercedes. Next came the Renault of Giancarlo Fisichella, with the BMW Sauber of Nick Heidfeld in fifth place. Alex Wurz, who last raced in Formula 1 in 2005 is now in a Williams and was sixth today. The weather is predicted to be dry and sunny for tomorrow, when the first qualifying session of the year should provide a fascinating journey into the unknown.

Felipe Massa: "It was a good day. We did a good job of comparing the two types of dry weather tyre and this morning we also got the opportunity to run in the wet, which led us to see that the balance of the F2007 is pretty good. This was a positive start to the weekend, but of course what counts is tomorrow's qualifying and most of all, Sunday's race."

Kimi Raikkonen: "We worked mainly on comparing the two types of tyre that we have, but I was a bit unlucky with the traffic and the red flag, which affected our programme."

Kimi Raikkonen: "We worked mainly on comparing the two types of tyre that we have, but I was a bit unlucky with the traffic and the red flag, which affected our programme. In any case, the car seems to be well balanced at this track and we managed to pick up a good base line of data to analyse today for qualifying and for the race."

Luca Baldisserri: "The Championship has got off in a different fashion to the past, with Friday based around three hours of testing, divided into two ninety minute sessions and sporting regulations that call for the use of both types of tyre during the race and a duty cycle for the engines consisting of running on Saturday and Sunday in two consecutive Grands Prix, but allowing therefore for a change of engine after these 180 minutes of free practice.  We are reasonably satisfied with the work we have done today, when the sessions were characterised by quite changeable weather conditions. We concentrated on tyre comparison, both in terms of performance over a single lap and on longer runs. Felipe was able to complete his planned programme, but Kimi was held up by the interruption halfway through the second session. All the same, we picked up a lot of data that will be useful for the rest of the weekend. The F2007 cars ran trouble free and seem well balanced. All in all, we can look to tomorrow's qualifying with reasonable confidence, while aware of all the questions that are still unanswered after free practice."

Free Practice - First session: F. Massa: 2nd 1.30.707 laps 7, chassis 260; K. Raikkonen: 19th 1.39.242 laps 7, chassis 261; Free Practice - Second session: F. Massa: 1st 1.27.353 laps 32, chassis 260; K. Raikkonen: 2nd 1.27.750 laps 33, chassis 261
