Scuderia Ferrari
Marlboro are unbeatable in the 2007 Constructors'
championship following Sunday's resounding one-two in the
sunny Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. McLaren's
points have been taken away following the FIA World Council
judgement on Thursday. Ferrari have 161 points to BMW
Sauber's 90, so they are now uncatchable.
The Driver's championship is still open, however. Kimi
Raikkonen and Felipe Massa finished an excellent one-two,
but Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton were three-four.
Hamilton now leads the championship by just two points from
his team mate, while Alonso is eleven points ahead of
Raikkonen, who is seven ahead of team mate Massa.
The Ferraris led off the front row into the tight La Source
hairpin where Massa slightly locked up, tempting Alonso to
go wide around him which pushed team mate Hamilton even
wider around him. The second McLaren ran right off the
circuit but was able to get back on without problems,
rejoining in fourth place. At the end of lap one, Raikkonen
already had a 1.3s gap to team mate Massa who was pushed by
Alonso and Hamilton before a small gap to fifth placed Nico
Rosberg, followed by Heikki Kovalainen, Mark Webber, Nick
Heidfeld (who had lost two places) and Ralf Schumacher.
Raikkonen would gradually ease away from Massa during the
opening stint, while the second Ferrari would do the same to
the McLarens. But the silver cars remained just a couple of
seconds apart. As expected, the four pulled away from the
rest, where the one-stopping Kovalainen steadily dropped
back as the BMW Saubers recovered, Kubica after a ten place
hit on the grid due to an engine change. The two-stoppers
began to pit on lap 14. Raikkonen had pulled out a 5.4s gap
over team mate Massa, with a similar gap back to Alonso, but
Hamilton was only three seconds behind his team mate in
fourth place. After their first stops, Raikkonen's lead had
dropped to 4.8s, but Massa's margin to Alonso had risen to
more than double that. Hamilton was still around 2.5s behind
his teammate.
In the second stint, Raikkonen's lead would fluctuate by as
much as two seconds, but it was still 5.9s when the Finn
pitted on lap 31, while the Ferraris' margin back to the
first McLaren was now 14 seconds. Hamilton, however, had
dropped further behind his team mate. Raikkonen was only two
seconds ahead of Massa when they emerged from their second
stops, now on softer tyres, which they both were surprised
to find quite favourable. That gap rose to nearly 4.7s over
the final 12 laps, with the Ferraris ensuring their one-two
with some careful laps which saw their margin over the
McLarens come down from 14s to just under ten at the
chequered flag. Hamilton also dropped back from behind his
team mate, but as ever, the first four finished but this
time with the Ferraris ahead of the McLarens.
Nick Heidfeld managed to overtake Rosberg for fifth place at
the first stop, but the Williams driver sealed sixth place
with Mark Webber scoring an excellent seventh. Kovalainen
was pushed all the way to the chequered flag by Robert
Kubica but hung on to score the final championship point.
This was the seventh victory of the season for Ferrari and
the fourth for Kimi Raikkonen.

Today's is the fourteenth Ferrari win in the Belgian Grand
Prix, number 199 out of 755 Grands Prix entered by the
Scuderia. Kimi took his 13th win from 119 Formula 1 races:
three of these wins, consecutively have come at
Spa-Francorchamps. It is the third one-two of the season for
Ferrari, the seventy fifth in its history.
Jean Todt: "Seventh win, the fourth with Kimi and
the third one-two of the year. These are the numbers after a
fantastic weekend and they come courtesy of all the work of
a great team, which is working as one, united and motivated,
while the drivers also did a great job. Also playing a key
role as ever was the support of our technical and partners,
such as Shell. Of course, with hindsight it is easy to say
we should have more points to our name at this stage of the
season. It is down to us to correct our mistakes and improve
our strong points. This is the key, if we want to have a
chance of winning the championships. There are three races
to go and we will tackle them in the same spirit with the
same approach as always, which means to say, with
determination, passion and team spirit."
Kimi Raikkonen: "A great day! I had some doubts about
the car's handling after yesterday's qualifying, but
everything went well. The car worked very well for the whole
race: I was quick enough in the first part to control the
race after that. It is nice to win here on my favourite
track for the third time in a row. Now we must continue to
push. We are still a long way off in the championship but we
are not giving up and we will keep going right to the very
end of the championship."
Felipe Massa: "It was a good race. I just had a bit
of oversteer in the first stint but, at the stop we made a
change to the front wing. The soft tyres worked very well
and it might have been better to use them even for the first
stint but you can only see things like that after the race.
I am very happy for the team as we really wanted this
one-two! Now, the situation in the championship is a bit
better and we will continue to fight to the end, believe
it!"
Luca Baldisserri: "It was a great weekend. After a
very close qualifying which saw us get both our cars on the
front row, today we dominated the race. The F2007s worked
really well, also thanks to the help of our technical
partners, first and foremost Shell. The start was very
important and then Kimi built up the gap in the first stint.
Both drivers were exceptional, as was the whole team, both
on the track and at home. Now we prepare for the last three
races, starting with the Japanese Grand Prix, which takes
place at a new venue. We will have to be as well prepared as
possible to give it our utmost to try and repeat a day like
today."
