26.06.2007 DOMINANT 1-2-3 FINISH FOR THE OMNIPOTENT FERRARI F430 IN FIA GT2 AT MONZA

After three consecutive FIA GT Championship wins for Dirk Müller and Toni Vilander in the hotly contested GT2 class, AF Corse conserved its winning ways at the weekend, but this time victory went to the #51 Ferrari 430 GT driven Stéphane Ortelli and Gianmaria Bruni. Unlucky in both Silverstone and Bucharest, this fourth round win might have been double GT champion Ortelli's 15th win in the FIA GT Championship, but it was former single-seater pilot Bruni's first victory with a roof over his head.

The FIA GT Championship arrived at Monza last weekend with Ferrari holding the advantage over Porsche in the GT2 class with three wins out of three, and apart from a win for the German brand at Le Mans last weekend, the F430 GT has been the class of the field this year. AF Corse, Team Edil Cris and Scuderia Ecosse would all be flying the flag for the Italian brand on its home soil.

In Saturday's qualifying it was Team Edil Cris which came out on top, the team taking its first pole position courtesy of a lap in 1:50.959 from Paolo Ruberti in the black #52 Ferrari F430 GT. He was sharing the car with French driver Damien Pasini. Ruberti was followed, in an all-Ferrari top three, by the two AF Corse Motorola cars, Müller qualifying second despite a total of 78 kg penalty weight amassed due to his trio of wins, while his team-mate Bruni was third. The F430 GT wasn't the only Maranello representative at Monza as in the Citation Cup pole position went to Lorenzo Casè driving the Kessel Racing Ferrari 575 M Maranello, which made it three different poles from three races for the Citation Cup.

Come race day at Monza on Sunday morning the #51 AF Corse car posted its intent to chase for victory in the morning warm-up session, Bruni setting the best GT2 lap, his time ahead of Collard's #97 BMS Scuderia Italia Porsche.

After three consecutive wins for Dirk Müller and Toni Vilander, AF Corse conserved its winning ways at Monza, but this time victory went to the Ferrari 430 GT of Stéphane Ortelli and Gianmaria Bruni.

Bruni and partner Ortelli went on to win the GT2 class, preserving both AF Corse and Ferrari's winning ways this year. They were followed by their team-mates Müller and Vilander, despite them carrying a 78 kg penalty weight, but who have conserved their Championship lead. Ortelli and Bruni are now lying in second place in the GT2 drivers' title chase. Third place went to Racing Team Edil Cris' F430 driven by Ruberti and Pasini, handing Ferrari a 1-2-3 finish at its home race.

Scuderia Ecosse had an unrewarding weekend. After qualifying their F430s in eight and ninth places the team had a mountain to climb during the race. Chris Niarchos started the race in Ferrari #63, his first-ever FIA GT race start, before handing over to Andrew Kirkaldy to complete the middle stint and get up to fifth position. Just as Niarchos was getting into the final stint he went off at the last corner and was unable to rejoin the race.

Tomas Enge started Ferrari #62 and made his way up to sixth place before the first pit stop. He handed the car to Tim Mullen after 45 minutes and Mullen was quickly up to speed, but after a few minutes he radioed in to say his engine had died. As soon as he stopped a marshal opened his door but at that moment the Ferrari roared into life and off Mullen went. The marshal didn’t get chance to shut the door properly so that was an added distraction for Tim for the remainder of his run. Enge jumped in for the final stint and brought the car home in seventh place.
