RACING FOR BELGIUM

16.03.2007 RACING FOR BELGIUM TO JOIN FIA WTCC WITH AN ALFA 156

A third N.Technology-built Alfa Romeo 156 will be seen in the FIA World Touring Car Championship from the next round in Zandvoort onwards, the 2007-specification Super Touring 2000 car being entered under the famous "Racing for Belgium" banner, and is set to be piloted by young Portuguese Renault Megane Trophy racer Miguel Freitas. The Racing for Belgium team hope to be able to give an initial track shakedown to their new Alfa 156 at Zolder on 22nd March when they hope to take advantage of an official test day at the Belgian circuit for the Belgian Touring Car Championship and Belcar series.

The Alfa 156 that Wim Coekelbergs' Belgian team will campaign in the remaining FIA WTCC races of 2007, starting from Zandvoort on 5/6 May, is the same machine that Italian touring car pilot Alessandro Balzan drove to an excellent fourth place overall in the season opening FIA WTCC race at Monza last year.

This year will also be a learning season season for the Racing for Belgium outfit, as next year they have hatched ambitious plans to run a pair of the new racers which are now being developed for the 2008 FIA WTCC, with full details of this programme set to be announced later during the season. The Belgian team had hoped to run two Alfa 156s this year, but with N.Technology busy building an additional car for their recently-signed second driver Olivier Tielemans, just one car will be campaigned at Zandvoort, although a second may well appear during the season.

Miguel Freitas has been signed up to drive the Racing for Belgium Alfa 156. The Portuguese youngster has driven for the team recently in the Eurocup Megane Trophy.
