The
best-selling Fiat 500 is set to conquer yet another new global
market when it arrives in Argentina for the first time next
week; but with just 90 units set to go on sale to commemorate
the anniversary of Fiat's
90 years of automotive operations in this Latin American
market, the Car of the Year 2008 award winner
isn't destined to become a common sight on the country's
streets anytime soon.
The Fiat
500's drive into new territories around the world
continues apace, and the award-winning supermini this
year has been making its way steadily into South America. In early
September the 500 arrived in Mexico, and the planned 40 units
destined for the first year was sold out within hours of
of the order books opening. At this month's 25th Salão Internacional do Automovel
in São Paulo, Latin America's biggest and most important
motor show, the 500 was presented on the Fiat stand
(photos right),
where it appear in Brazil for the first time; it is
expected to go on sale on that market imminently.
It's arrival in Latin America follows a roll-out
beyond Europe that has seen it introduced in India and
Singapore this
summer, while other distant car markets where the Tychy,
Poland-built small car is proving to be a hit include
Japan, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.
Due to high regional import tariffs the
500 is being targeted in South America only as a halo model,
aimed at celebrities and the most fashion conscious, and imports
will be made only in tiny numbers. The Argentinean market
will now get 90 units to commemorate the anniversary of Fiat
setting up operations in the country. The 500 will be
launched in Argentina at a ceremony on 26th November. The
sole version to be
imported will be the 1.4 litre 16v petrol engine option, and
pricing is expected to be around US$28,500.
