Ferrari
yesterday wrapped up three days of testing with the new
F2008 chassis in mixed circuit conditions at the Jerez
circuit in Spain, the first major track programme for
the car that it will use to defend its F1 drivers' and
constructors' titles this year.
Testing at Jerez
had kicked off on Monday when Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe
Massa, joined by almost all their rivals on track, topped
the time sheets as the pair gave the F2008 its first serious
outing since a short shakedown took place at Fiorano last
week. The new F2008 is one of the new breed of F1 cars built
for this season's regulations that dispenses with a host of
electronic driver aids, including traction control.
Tuesday saw the
second day of testing this week for Ferrari, working again
at the Jerez circuit, in southern Spain. Raikkonen and Massa
continued on the development programme of the F2008, both
driving one of the new cars, evaluating various set-up
changes, as well as doing some practice starts. The day in
figures was as follows: 90 laps for Raikkonen (best time
1:19.708) and 86 for Massa, (1:19.772). Fastest time of the
day fell to Spaniard Fernando Alonso (1:19.503) who made an
impressively smooth return to the Renault cockpit. He was
ahead of McLaren tester Pedro de la Rosa in the timesheets
with the two Ferrari drivers' posting the third and fourth
quickest times.
Yesterday (Wednesday) saw the third and final day of testing
this week with Raikkonen and Massa bringing to an end the
development work planned for this three day session on the
F2008. It had centred mainly on learning about the new car,
the electronics, the quest for reliability and some initial
set-up evaluation. Yesterday morning's running was carried
out on a wet track, while only towards the end of the day,
did the track end up completely dry. The day in figures was
as follows: 88 laps for Raikkonen (best time 1:20.646) and
85 for Massa, (1:20.500). Fastest time of the day fell to
young German driver Timo Glock (1:19.779, 96 laps) in the
new Toyota TF108, while David Coulthard gave the new Red
Bull RB4 its first outing.
The Scuderia
will be back in action on 22nd January at Valencia's
"Ricardo Tormo" circuit, for three days of testing, once
again with Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen driving. Most of
the other F1 teams will also remain in Spain over the
weekend to take part in this official test.
Meanwhile after
15 years of invaluable work in the press relations and
communication office, Antonio Ghini is leaving his present
position, but will continue to collaborate with Ferrari on
some special projects. Stefano LAI takes over his position
as head of product as well as motor sports communications.
LAI comes from the Benetton Group where was Director of
Communication and External Relations. Formerly, LAI worked
for 10 years at Vodafone as External Relations Director and
successively as New Media Product Development Director.
