It was
another Ferrari 1-2-3 in the GT2 class at the fourth
round of the FIA GT Championship at Oschersleben,
Germany, today. The AF Corse team took their second
successive 1-2 and Gianmaria Bruni and Toni Vilander
their second win in a row. Andrew Kirkaldy and Rob Bell
were third for the CR Scuderia team, the top three
covered by little more than a second on the tight,
twisty circuit on the outskirts of Magdeburg. The threat
of rain just about held off during the race, giving the
28 starters a clear race.
The Ferrari 430 GT was perfect throughout the race
today, Bruni leading from pole position and he was only
bothered by a safety car for debris on the circuit
mid-way through his second stint. That bunched up the
field but the Italian was able to hold off his team-mate
and a late challenge from Bell to take the flag. In the
middle of their fight was a whole train of Ferraris, all
lapped and none giving way, but up front, it was Richard
Westbrook's Porsche which was causing the most problems
to the race leaders. The British driver, who went almost
a full lap down behind the safety car, did not know
whether or not he was fighting any of the Ferraris for
position and so staunchly held his line past the
chequered flag.
Tension runs high between the Ferrari and Porsche teams
given the history so far this season, with the Monza
result a particular thorn in the sides of both teams.
"Richard Westbrook acts like he is still in the Porsche
Supercup," said Bruni who was driving the final stint.
"He was shutting the door like the last race of the
championship and he was still fighting for the title."
Third placed Rob Bell added: "We focus as much on the
GT2 race as GT1, and when Ferrari is 1-2-3 within 10
metres of each other, we cannot race each other because
there are lapped cars in the way." Westbrook said: "I
didn't know that we were not fighting for position and I
wasn't going to roll out the red carpet for them."
Aston Martin returned a 1-2 result in GT1 when the
JetAlliance team of Karl Wendlinger and Ryan Sharp
scored their second win of the year. They started from
pole position but dropped to third place, behind their
team-mates Alex Muller and Lukas Lichtner-Hoyer,
returning to the lead during the first round of pit
stops. Christophe Bouchut was fired up at the start
having claimed to be blocked in qualifying and denied
pole position. He put his SRT Corvette into second ahead
of Wendlinger at the start, and stayed there until he
spun 21 laps later. He was classed seventh with Xavier
Maassen having also been penalised for speeding in the
pit lane.
Marcel Fassler and Jean-Denis Deletraz took the final
GT1 podium position in their Team Phoenix Corvette C6.R
after their team-mate, Fabrizio Gollin, spun the car he
shared with Mike Hezemans nine laps from home. "There
was no bite in the brakes," complained the Italian.
Fassler had to defend from Michael Bartels' Maserati in
the closing laps, but that battle was decided when the
German spun and was classed fifth behind his team-mate
Miguel Ramos and Alexander Negrao.
