The eagerly
awaited and most important appointment on the FIA GT
International Championship calendar, took place at the
weekend at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, with the 61st
running of the 24 Hours, one of the oldest and most
fascinating races in the history of motor sport and the
only one to count for double points.
Victory in the GT2 class went to the BMS Scuderia Italia
F430, driven by Matteo Malucelli, Paolo Ruberti, Joel
Camathias and Davide Rigon, who finished the race having
completed 555 laps, totalling 3887.22 kilometres. They
had to fight hard throughout the 24 hours to get the
better of the second placed Porsche 997, crewed by
Collard, Westbrook and Lieb.
“This is my
second Spa win in a row, so I’m very happy," Malucelli
commented. "Last year I won in a Porsche, this year it’s
a Ferrari. I had a small problem with the traction
control and I spun at La Source, but apart from that the
car was perfect. This was very important for our
championship challenge – we’re now in second position,
but it will be very difficult to catch Vilander and
Bruni.” For BMS Scuderia Italia it was the team's second
consecutive win in the GT2 class at Spa, last year they
won using the Porsche 911, while for Ferrari it was the
second 24 hour win of the year, following on from Risi
Competizione's victory in the Le
Mans 24 Hours.
A well
deserved trip to the third step of the podium went to
the AF Corse crew of Gianmaria Bruni, Tony Vilander,
Jaime Melo and Mika Salo, who were front runners despite
having to start the race from the pit lane after having
to change engines during qualifying and having to make
an unscheduled stop to fix a broken hydraulic jack,
which cost them a several laps.
Ferrari maintains its lead in the championship thanks to
AF Corse, BMS Scuderia Italia and CR Scuderia, the trio
are solidly heading the teams' classification on 79, 50
and 35.5 points respectively. The next round of the FIA
GT Championship, the sixth appointment of the season,
will take place at the Bucharest Circuit in Romania,
over the weekend of 24th August.
