With the FIA GT Championship due to make its first-ever
trip to South America this year, when the season finale
will be held at the Potrero de los Funes circuit in San
Luis, Argentina, it has been announced that an
all-Argentine team will compete in the GT1 category.
To be known as Escuderia ACA Argentina, the team will
run a Ferrari 550 Maranello with four Argentine drivers,
who will share the drive. For Silverstone, the drivers
will be José Maria Lopez, a successful single-seater
driver in Formula Renault, Formula 3000 and GP2, and
Martín Basso, who has competed in the Argentine Touring
Car Championship, TC2000.
The other two drivers for the 2008 season will be former
Formula One drivers Esteban Tuero and Gaston Mazzacane.
The team will be managed by Jack Leconte, already
present in GT1 with his Larbre Competition team, and
with the support of Care Racing. The Ferrari 550 Maranello is one of the most successful cars in the
history of the FIA GT Championship, only rivalled by the
Chrysler Viper GTS-R. It won the FIA GT Championship in
2003, 2004 and 2005 – the last victory going to Larbre
Competition’s Gabriele Gardel. “We hope this will give
this car a glorious final season,” commented Stephane
Ratel.
This will make two all-Argentine line-ups in the 2008
Championship, with Escuderia ACA Argentina joining
Advanced Engineering Pecom Racing Team’s GT2 duo of
Matías Russo and Luis Perez Companc.
