Race Retro, the international
historic motorsport show, is lining up a cracking array
of motorsport legends for its 2010 show – from racing
cars and drivers to track bikes and riders.
Held at
Stoneleigh Park, Coventry, from 12th to 14th March 2010,
Race Retro will be celebrating all things Alfa Romeo on its
centenary year with a stunning display of vehicles and some
of its leading drivers appearing including Italian racing
legend Bruno Giacomelli.
After sporadic
races with the McLaren team in F1 in 1977 and 1978,
Giacomelli was entrusted with the wheel of the glorious
Flat-12 engined Alfa 177 when Alfa Romeo made its
long-awaited F1 comeback at the Belgian Grand Prix in 1979.
This would be the first of four seasons Giacomelli would
spend at the wheel of its cars, driving the 179, in all its
various guises, starting from the Italian Grand Prix of that
year onwards, and then the 182 in the 1982 season, before
moving onto Toleman in 1983 and finally reappearing in 1990
for a very forgettable season with the Life team and its
unsuccessful W12-engine project.
Giacomelli
eventually participated in 82 grands prix from 1977 through
to 1990, collecting a total of 14 points, with the highlights
being a podium place at the Caesars Place Grand Prix in 1981
at the wheel of the Alfa Romeo 179C and pole position at the
U.S. Grand Prix at Watkins Glen the previous year.
As part of the
Alfa Romeo centenary celebrations, Race Retro organisers
have also invited Alfa Romeo clubs and owners to exhibit
their marque in a dedicated hall as well as having
specialist Alfa restorers, race teams and engineers on hand
to answer all your questions.
Outside visitors
can enjoy all the high octane action on the Live Rally Stage
over the weekend. One of the most popular features of the
show, this year’s course has been redesigned and moved
closer to the action inside the show to make sure visitors
don’t miss any aspect of the event. To tie into the Live
Rally Stage, there will also be a special tribute to the
Audi Quattro, one of the most iconic cars of the 80s and the
first rally car to take advantage of the change in rules
which allowed the use of four-wheel drive in competition
racing.
For those who
prefer two wheeled racers, there will be a tribute to 60
years of Norton with racers on hand to talk about the bikes’
finest hour. Expect to be rubbing shoulders with Peter
Williams, Phil Read MBE, John ‘Mooneyes’ Cooper, Trevor
Nation and Keith Heckles, who will be talking with Race
Retro motorcycle MC Steve Parrish. At the H&H Classic and
Historic Motorsport Auction, the organisers promise an
amazing range of rare and desirable cars, bikes and
memorabilia on offer. Add to this hundreds of trade stands,
the popular Ken Fox Wall of Death and a host of other names
yet to be announced.
