All
parties have moved very swiftly to deny comments from an
Italian labour union representative reported by ANSA that a
deal between Chrysler and Fiat is almost done. Bruno
Vitali's comments provoked a swift rebuttal from Fiat and
the United Auto Workers this afternoon.
"We were surprised by the statement released
to ANSA today by the FIM-CISL representative for the
automotive sector, Bruno Vitali, in relation to the current
negotiations with Chrysler," read a statement issued by Fiat
this afternoon in Turin. "No agreement has been concluded between
Chrysler and trade unions in the US and Canada and the
assertion that the overall agreement has been 90 percent defined is
untrue. The talks remain completely open and it is not
currently possible to predict the timing or the outcome,"
the Fiat press release concluded.
Meanwhile
the United Auto Workers, the union that represents
Chrysler staff in North America also rebutted the claim.
"We are continuing to work toward an agreement that will
be in the best interests of Chrysler workers, retirees,
and the communities where the company does business,"
President Ron Gettelfinger said in a statement.
Vitali
later spoke to the Reuters by phone
and said the talks still could
unravel. "There is no agreement
regarding the Chrysler issue," he
told the news agency. "But there is a strong push on
the part of the American union to
close this negotiation in a positive
way. But keep in mind that we are in
talks and that it could all fall
apart," added Vitali who is in
Detroit at the moment for talks with
the UAW.
