"It is possible to build walls that separate city from city, nation from nation, people from people. But it is impossible to build a wall that separates man from his freedom...Because freedom always finds a way to create peace. This film is dedicated to Aung San Suu Kyi. Still a prisoner behind a wall of silence."

Still a prisoner behind a wall of silence."

In the same way as last year, Lancia has decided to make a film in order to give a voice to the cause of Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Peace Laureate in 1991, interpreting the collective desire to knock down the walls of her prison.

Lancia, the main sponsor of the 10th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, taking place in Berlin this week has dedicated a film to Aung San Suu Kyi. The main theme of the Summit this year is "Knocking down new walls and building bridges for a world without violence".

This year the Summit is being held in Berlin following the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Wall. A great number of Nobel Peace Laureates and various protagonists from the international scene committed to the battle to knock down all walls, both physical and cultural, are meeting up. They include Nobel Peace Laureates Mikhail Gorbachev, Frederik Willem De Klerk, Lech Walesa, Muhammad Yunus, Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Betty Williams and many guests of honour such as the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso, Annie Lennox and others.

Lancia wished to support the 10th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates with its presence and the use of its cars. It wished to stand alongside the Nobel Peace Laureates to be another central voice in the universal message of freedom. In order to reinforce the meaning of its presence, the brand has created an imposing background at the front of Summit: a symbolic section of the Berlin Wall shattered by the message of the ex-President of South Africa Mr. Nelson Mandela projected on an enormous screen in the middle of the installation. A message that the South African leader has created especially for this Lancia initiative, accompanied by moving pictures that tell the story of barriers broken down by the desire for independence and emancipation.

In the same way as last year, Lancia has decided to make a film in order to give a voice to the cause of Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Peace Laureate in 1991, interpreting the collective desire to knock down the walls of her prison. The brick wall in Burma and the wall of silence that too often suffocates the telling of her story. This message is dedicated to her, a powerful example of someone who has been denied her personal freedom and political liberty.

The film, which is thirty seconds long, was first screened today during the 10th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in the presence of the Mayor of Berlin, the Nobel Peace Laureates and many other figures from the world of politics, culture and show business. It will be shown to the international press at the Lancia Café on Friedrichstraße 182, already the brand’s showroom in the German capital for the last two years.

“The film we are showing today“, said Oliver Francois, Managing Director of Lancia Automobiles, ”was produced in honour of all those who put their lives at stake in the hopes of making the world a better place. I am thinking in particular to those men and women who are still prisoners, like Aung San Suu Kyi. The objectives of a car manufacturer and of those who fight for peace and to knock down all types of walls can be achieved together if both are willing to use their own resources and image to send a courageous and just message. We believe strongly in this. We at Lancia want to make a difference”. Various international television networks and protagonists in world communication have been involved in Lancia's project and will screen the film.

The film

"It is possible to build walls that separate city from city, nation from nation, people from people. But it is impossible to build a wall that separates man from his freedom...Because freedom always finds a way to create peace. This film is dedicated to Aung San Suu Kyi. Still a prisoner behind a wall of silence."

These are the evocative words that accompany the short film that opens at the Brandenburg Gate and continues with images of the Berlin Wall, those sections that still exist, witnesses to a story that cannot be forgotten. The Lancia Deltas accompany us on this journey until they arrive in front of the Town Hall of the German capital, host of the Summit. And then, one after the other, men and women who are the symbols of peace and the struggle against all forms of oppression and violence such as Mikhail Gorbachev, Lech Walesa, Fredrik Willem de Klerk and Muhammed Yunus get out of the cars.

As the music reaches its emotional crescendo we discover that one Lancia Delta is different from the others, it is white. Facing it is the Berlin Wall which is a symbol, not only for the German people, of liberty denied. A barrier that the car smashes through, transforming the explosion into a flight of white doves, universal symbol of peace. This car goes up the steps to the Town Hall but, as the rear door opens the seat is empty: someone is missing. It is Aung San Suu Kyi, still held prisoner in her own country.

This year too, the Lancia management created this project in conjunction with the organisers of the Summit. The creative process, a real case of "instant production", was finalised by the Armando Testa Group who took care of all aspects and the various media. This agency has, for a long time, been the driving force behind Lancia campaigns. They took less than two days to complete this project with the support of the Little Bull production company.

Such limited production times, resulting from the unique nature of the event, were made possible through a meticulous simulation of the frames with tables and drawings, as well as special organisation by the director, who was particularly flexible, and the use of journalistic reporting techniques, all in the days leading up to the event. The film will be on-air from 12th November in Italy and Europe.

The web: Your Face For Freedom / Location: YourFaceForFreedom.org / Mass media meeting place: Facebook.com, one of the best known social networks / Date: 10th December 2009.

From 12th November, Lancia is also launching the Your Face For Freedom initiative which is designed to create an online event with a very powerful impact thanks to the support of everyone who, through a small gesture, wants, together with Lancia, to support the campaign for the freedom of the Burmese Nobel Peace Laureate.

Simply replace your picture on your Facebook profile with the slogan "Aung San Suu Kyi Free Now" by 10th December, the date of the official ceremony for awarding the Nobel Peace Prizes to spread this important message for liberty. Supporting this initiative will be visible both on Facebook and at YourFaceForFreedom.org, where all the photos of the Facebook profiles of the participants in the event who have lent their support directly will be published on the Wall For Freedom.
