Felipe Massa has
been hospitalised after a high speed crash during the
qualifying sessions at the Hungaroring this afternoon, the
Brazilian driver was hit by debris from another car on the
Hungaroring circuit and his Ferrari
F60 suffered a big impact with a tyre wall. A component came
off Ruben's Barrichello's Brawn GP car and appeared to fly up
into the air before hitting the Ferrari driver on the
helmet, momentarily dazing him, although he seemed to brake before
hitting the tyre wall.
Massa was airlifted
to hospital immediately following the accident and later on this afternoon Ferrari
released this statement: "After the accident during the
qualifying session of the Grand Prix of Hungary , Felipe
Massa was airlifted to the AEK hospital in Budapest. Felipe
was conscious at the arrival at the hospital and his general
conditions remain stable. Following a complete medical
examination it emerged that he had suffered a cut on his
forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion.
These conditions need to be operated on after which he will
remain under observation in intensive care."
Meanwhile team mate
Kimi Raikkonen placed his Ferrari F60 onto the fourth row of
the grid for
tomorrow's Hungarian Grand Prix after setting the seventh
fastest time in the Q3 session. "Felipe was just very
unlucky," Raikkonen commented after qualifying was over. "It
was just an unlucky situation." Massa was actually credited
with the tenth best time as his accident occurred once he
had made it through to the final shoot out.
