22.08.2009 SEBASTIEN BUEMI SECURES FIFTEENTH SLOT ON THE GRID IN VALENCIA

SEBASTIEN BUEMI - SCUDERIA TORO ROSSO - VALENCIA QUALIFYING SESSION

Scuderia Toro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi carried his improved Friday form into this afternoon's qualifying session in Valencia and the young Swiss rookie made it through to the Q2 phase to eventually secure fifteenth place on the grid for tomorrow's European Grand Prix. His 19-year-old team mate Jaime Alguersuari continued his steep learning curve to wind up in qualifying in nineteenth spot, just piping Ferrari's Luca Badoer who is making his F1 return (as well as Ferrari debut) after 10 years away from the sport, on the timesheets. Alguersuari will be starting his second ever grand prix tomorrow.

Both of the Ferrari-powered Toro Rosso cars have new upgrades this weekend, including new front wings, components that have filtered down from the title-chasing senior Red Bull squad. Toro Rosso's Technical Director Giorgio Ascanelli commented after the qualifying session: “Not much to say: we got one car through to Q2 and both cars have run reliably over the past two days.”

Sebastien Buemi (STR4-03): “Even though I got into Q2, I’m a bit disappointed, because in Q1 I was sixth with a good lap time and then in Q2, we did not manage the tyre situation well, especially on my “out” lap and I ended up doing worse than in Q1. Now we must look at what happened, because I think I might even have had the possibility to get into Q3. We are making progress.”

Third Practice Session: Best lap 1.40.118, pos. 11th, 12 laps; Qualifying Session: Best lap 1.39.514, pos. 15th

Jaime Alguersuari (STR4-02): “I know what I am capable of and with this being only my second F1 qualifying session, I have to be patient. I am happy that even though this track is longer than at my first race in Hungary, the gap to the drivers ahead of me is getting smaller. I am feeling more confident in the car every time I drive it. It’s going to be tough tomorrow as it seems to be getting hotter and hotter. I think I can do a good job in the race, bring the car home and hopefully end up at least in the top fifteen.”

Third Practice Session: Best lap 1.41.125, pos. 19th, 12 laps; Qualifying Session: Best lap 1.39.925, pos. 19th
