At a news
conference on the occasion of Wrooom 2009, the Formula 1
and MotoGp Press Ski Meeting in Madonna di Campiglio,
Stefano Domenicali spoke about his forecast for the
upcoming season and how this year will be a particular
one in the history of Formula 1, with major changes as
far as the regulations are concerned and that it will be
very important to keep the goals in sight in such a fast
changing environment.
Domenicali urged everybody to "remain with the feet on
the ground, because it will be a very difficult
Championship. Looking ahead will also be required from
our partners, especially from Marlboro, with whom we're
sharing a common project."
The teams, the main players in this sport, have to work
in the same direction, to transmit a consistent message.
"As of the next tests in Portimao, Portugal, we'll start
comparing ourselves to the other teams. It will be
interesting to see where we are and where our
competitors are. I've met a very fresh and motivated
Felipe Massa. He matured a lot over the last season. His
strong point over these years was, that he always
believed in himself. I think he's mentally ready and
mature enough to manage the pressure, from inside and
outside. Kimi Raikkonen can't wait to get back into the
car and he'll have the possibility at Portimao. He wants
to show that he's himself again, after President
Montezemolo's joke, that it was his twin brother driving
by the end of the season. Kimi has and always had an
enormous capacity: knowing how to detach himself. This
allows him not to feel any pressure from outside."
The Scuderia's Director added: "Last year we didn't
loose a single point due to mismanagement by our
drivers: the Team works for both drivers and if we can
give them a competitive car - as we hope we do - we
won't have any psychological pressure from inside. Our
President is working on Formula One's future. Without
FOTA we would never have reached an agreement as far as
cost cutting is concerned. The agreement, signed to save
money on the track, is also a necessity for the smaller
teams. In such a context, where it's very important to
cut costs, it will be necessary to find new
possibilities for the released employees inside the
structure."
As far as the F60 is concerned, the single-seater, which
debuted on 12th January at Mugello, Domenicali said: "We
started with a project, which is not an evolution of
last year's car. Therefore it will be fundamental to be
immediately competitive and to invest in reliability and
in simulation, which is very useful, because the results
can also be used in the road car production."
Apropos KERS, Domenicali repeated what he already said
at the Mugello press conference two days ago at Mugello,
that he thinks that this is the wrong moment to start
using such a complex system. "I think that this season
will be extremely competitive, while our main
competitors are McLaren and BMW, and also Renault has
done a lot of work."
Will Alonso come to Ferrari for the next season? "I
think it's difficult to add anything else to what has
been said as far as this issue is concerned. Our drivers
have signed contracts, even if President Montezemolo has
said 'wait and see'. Fernando is a great driver, but
we're extremely happy with the drivers we have."
About Michael Schumacher Domenicali commented: "Michael
is working as our consultant. He reports to me for F1
and to the GT Technical Direction as far as road cars
are concerned. This year he will contribute in terms of
engineering and the correct interpretation of the
slicks."
And about the relationship between Dyer and Kimi
Domenicali added: "The negative relationship between
Chris Dyer and Kimi is pure imagination. Robert Smedley
and Felipe have an empathic relationship, which was
quite obvious and which seems to be in contrast to the
others. But Dyer's professional road had already been
planned. Andrea Stella was Michael Schumacher's race
engineer and then Kimi's: this change is the natural
evolution of his career, helped by a perfect
relationship between those two.
Kimi Raikkonen
Today was this
season's debut of Kimi Raikkonen: not on the track because
the Finnish driver will have his first appearance in the F60
next Monday on the Portimao circuit, but in front of the
media at the traditional Wrooom event. "This is my third
season with Ferrari and I'm motivated and I want to win, as
usual," Kimi said. "Last year didn't go as I wanted,
especially during the second half of the season. But we
learned a lot. I feel fine at Ferrari, otherwise I wouldn't
be here today. I'm convinced that it was the right choice
when I came to join the Team. The future? I've got a
contract until the end of the 2010 season. At a certain
point during the next season we'll think about what to do.
But I think that this will be the last Formula One team I'm
racing with."
The journalists had lots of questions for Kimi and some
referred to President Montezemolo's remark about Kimi's
"twin-brother", who raced during the second half of the last
season and Stefano Domenicali's comment on Kimi, who's able
to "stay isolated on his own planet". "The President made a
joke, but I can confirm that it's always me. I've got a
brother, but he's not racing in F1! As far as my planet is
concerned I have to say that I like staying there and I
can't complain about anything at all. But joking aside,
Stefano explained that I like living my own life and I try
not to be influenced by things surrounding me."
Racing is a big part on Planet Kimi, with any kind of
vehicle. Next week he'll spent at the Portimao circuit and
then on the icy roads of Finland. After the test sessions
with the Scuderia Kimi will take part in the Arctic Rally
behind the wheel of a Grande Punto Abarth S2000: "I'm happy
that the teams gives me this opportunity to take part in my
first rally: it will be a great experience and it will allow
me to prepare myself while having fun."
Felipe Massa
During the
traditional Wrooom event Felipe Massa spoke to the media:
"From the driver's point of view the F60 is a completely
different car compared to the previous single-seater. It has
a higher downforce, slides much more, although much has been
done with the tyres, and then there's the KERS, a new
component, we need to get used to quickly. The front wing is
another element we have to work with a lot; but only after
the first few races, when we're on the track with all the
other cars, we'll see if the measure is excessive.
"We didn't drive a lot at Mugello and we never went to the
limit. Therefore we can't give an overall and definite
impression. Regarding the KERS the results were better than
expected. Using all the possibilities while braking we could
reach the system's highest possible level. The system is
there to improve performance, but it could also be helpful
for overtaking. The fact that there are batteries on board
makes the safety even more important for the driver and the
technicians, working with the car. Due to the new rules
there will be much more work; but we just have to get used
to it, like in the past with the traction control and the
engine brakes. Driving mistakes might happen, but they won't
be caused by the electronics."
Regarding the perspectives for the 2009 Championship the
Brazilian driver said: "Due to all the changes this
Championship will be as if starting from zero for everyone;
it's difficult to say who our main competitors will be, but
when we consider the last season McLaren, BMW and Peugeot
seem to there." Felipe is sure that there will be several
surprises. He expects Hamilton to be very competitive, but
what happened last season will be a stimulus for him,
without any negative pressure.
Felipe came to Formula One racing during the era of video
games, so he wasn't surprised at all about all the changes
over the last years; he's not convinced that there is a rule
he would change for the simple fact, that they all have been
introduced to make racing more competitive. He's not happy
about the cost cutting going on at the moment, although it's
necessary, or about limiting test sessions, because it's bad
for the staff and, as far as he is concerned, lets him spend
less time with the Team on the track, which will have to be
made up with simulations.
Last year's mishaps helped him to grow, because working with
negative results makes him learn for the future. It's
difficult to remember another F1 Championship that has been
decided in the last race. But Felipe just wants to learn
from this defeat and grow stronger. He feels more mature
today and sees himself in the best situation since he
started racing in Formula 1. He's happy racing in different
countries and he thinks that it's important in economical
terms, but also because he likes to see places he doesn't
know. He likes Bahrain and he hopes it will be the same in
Abu Dhabi. The Championship's last race in Brazil was
especially exciting for Felipe. He's not displeased at all
that he won't be able to repeat this feeling in 2009,
because maybe this year's outcome might be decided during
the season. For the future he hopes to race in France once
again, because he likes the country and he likes to think
back to his victory at Magny-Cours.
For quite a
while people have been talking about Alonso coming to
Ferrari. "For two years people have been talking about it
and I still haven't seen him. These are just rumours.
Sometimes they come true and sometimes they don't. We have
our contracts; we'll see after two years; many things can
change, but for now we're only talking about rumours,"
Felipe said.
