Michael Schumacher is to get behind the wheel of
an older Ferrari F2007 single-seater for the
second time in less than a fortnight at Mugello,
and is set to test tomorrow and Wednesday on the
Italian circuit, as he continues with his
intensive preparations for his F1 comeback which
is scheduled for just thirteen days time. "It is
currently planned that Michael will drive
Tuesday and Wednesday at Mugello,“ Schumacher's
spokesperson Sabine Kehm told German newspaper
Bild today. "He can again use the 2007
car belonging to F1 Clienti, albeit on his own
initiative and at his own expense."
The
seven times F1 world champion was sensationally
called up by Ferrari after Felipe Massa
sustained an horrific injury in the Hungarian
Grand Prix late last month which will keep him
out of the cockpit for sometime, with Maranello
announcing the dramatic news that Schumacher
would come out of retirement on July 30.
Schumacher retired from grand prix racing at the end of the
2006 season and his appearance at the wheel of F1 cars has
been only sporadic since. He tested a Ferrari
F2007 at Mugello on a week last Friday as he began to prepare himself
for his cockpit return; before that his last time in an F1
car was April last year. The F2007, which belonged to the
Corse Clienti department, that was used in the test was fitted
with tyres used by the GP2 single-seater feeder series as
the rules forbid testing with either a current F1 car or
this year's tyre compounds.
Ferrari had hoped to let the
German test the latest F60, which he will be driving in
Spain, as the regulations have changed significantly since
last year, but the Williams, Red Bull and Toro Rosso teams
all vetoed the proposal. Instead last week the
German continued his preparations by undertaking
two days of karting at Lonato.
"Karting has a very good training effect, that
is why today I just jumped into a testing day of
the Tonykart Team in Lonato," Schumacher
said in a note posted on his website at the end
of the first day of karting last Wednesday.
"There is nothing better for my preparations at
the moment - in terms of steering wheel forces
for example Karting is even more difficult than
Formula 1. And the fact that it has been boiling
hot here is simulating the temperatures expected
for Valencia.
