The world’s fastest one-make series, the
Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, will make
its debut at the Adria International Raceway in
Italy, this weekend (15-16 May). And with only a few days
to go, drivers are preparing to get behind the
wheel of the 570 hp Super Trofeo race cars to
take to the 2.7 kilometre Italian track.
The Super Trofeo will visit European circuits
across six race weekends, including Norisring,
Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone, Catalunya and
Paul Ricard, supporting the world’s finest
sportscar series, FIA GT, Europe’s most popular
touring car championship, DTM, and the British
F3 and GT Championships.
Drivers compete in identical Gallardo LP 560-4
race cars, equipped with Lamborghini’s V10 5.2
litre ‘Iniezione Diretta Stratificata’ engine
and four-wheel drive system. Professional and
‘Gentleman’ drivers will contest in three
40-minute races during the race weekend.
"Debuting the Super Trofeo series at Adria,
supporting the FIA GT, creates an excellent
start to what we hope will be an outstanding
season,” said Manfred Fitzgerald, Director of
Brand and Design for Lamborghini. “Adria is
perfect for the Super Trofeo. With the passion
and heart of Lamborghini, the Italian setting
will be fitting for what we are confident will
be a successful debut weekend.”
Fifteen drivers are confirmed for the first
meeting of the mono-marque series this weekend including
former Formula One test-drivers Marco Apicella
and Jonathan Cochet, the FIA GT Champion and DTM
competitor Uwe Alzen, 24 Hours of Le Mans class
winner Peter Kox and the endurance racing veteran
Alexander Frei. Also competing in the Super
Trofeo will be FIA GT3
competitor and Formula 3 Euro Series Rookies’
Champion, Erik Janiš.
The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo
features the Lamborghini
Super Trofeo: a lightweight version of the
Gallardo LP 560-4. The Super Trofeo will come
with a reworked chassis and a power output of
419 kW (570 hp) from its V10, ‘Iniezione Diretta
Stratificata’ engine. The race car will feature
Lamborghini’s permanent four-wheel drive, making
the Super Trofeo the only one-make,
all-wheel-drive motorsport series.
The
new Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo racing
series has been pleased to announce that one of Europe’s most
established endurance racing drivers, the 2004 Le Mans
Endurance Series Champion Alexander Frei will be joining
the inaugural series.
One of the most experienced drivers in the field
will be Alexander
Frei who has a long history in sportscar racing, and has
considerable Lamborghini competition experience.
Rejoining Team Autovitesse for Super Trofeo this year,
Frei already has a relationship with the Italian marque,
taking multiple class wins in the Diablo GTR at races
such as the gruelling Spa-Francorchamps 24 Hours.
In more recent years, Frei has driven for the French
Courage squad, winning the LMP2 class of the first Le
Mans Endurance Series in 2004, and has participated in
no less than four Le Mans 24 Hours events. The Swiss
driver’s best finish was eighth overall in 2005.
“I’m sure that the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo is
going to be fun,” said Frei, who after taking a year out of competition in 2008, is back
to contest in the pan-European, eighteen-race Super
Trofeo season. “The championship offers
thrilling cars and great international race tracks, I
can’t wait for the first race because Silverstone is one
of my favourite circuits. Being able to drive the Super
Trofeo there will be an extraordinary experience."
“We are happy to welcome Alexander Frei back to the
Lamborghini family,” said Manfred Fitzgerald, Director
of Brand and Design for Lamborghini. “Super Trofeo
offers an opportunity for experienced drivers and
newcomers to sportscar racing alike, to compete on a
level plane; fascinating racing will be the result.”
