Well known extreme
British Porsche specialist Oakley Design has become the
first tuner too take a serious bite at Ferrari's new 458
Italia sports car issuing renderings of its makeover
package that it claims will offer some improvements to
the overall performance along with upgrades to the
aerodynamics and weight reduction. These new Oakley
Design-wrought improvements will be specially-offered as
a complete kit and limited to just five editions, each
carrying a unique build number, or sold on an individual
basis to customers.
Oakley Design, which has
received acclaim for its packages for the
Porsche GT2, GT3 and Panamera,
says that through revising the ECU it is able to
raise maximum power from the standard 458 Italia's 560
bhp by 58 bhp, to bring it up to 618 bhp, while peak
torque also benefits by 20 Nm, from the production
model's 540 Nm it now climbs to 560 Nm in the Oakley
Design version.
Oakley Design, which
has forged its reputation on providing exclusive
packages for an array of Porsche models and is closely
involved in the "track day scene", claims that a new
carbon-fibre front lip spoiler improves front axle's
downforce by 45 kg at 240 km/h, this was verified by
wind tunnel testing, which will benefit drivers who use
their 458 Italia for track events,
while the new racecar-style centrally positioned
radiator vent now channels air out over the bonnet
instead of under the car.
This vent also helps to boost the airflow at the base of
the front windscreen, benefiting overall aerodynamics.
A "Gurney Flap" fitted to the rear spoiler adds a
further 25 kg of downforce at 240 km/h over the rear
axle. Further aerodynamic improvements come from new
horizontal-profile side-skirts and new diffuser sections
at the rear.
Weight reduction has
been tackled by incorporating a new roof section made
out of carbon-fibre as well as the use of similar
composite materials for the door mirrors and air vents,
with weight kept down as the additional new spoilers,
side skirts and diffuser are also all made out of
carbon-fibre. Oakley Design has also developed a new
custom exhaust system that disposes of the standard
bypass valve and it claims that this sheds a further 30
kg from the 458 Italia's overall weight.
The 458 Italia's
standard wheels are shed in favour of 20-inch OZ Racing
rims that are shod with 245/35ZR20 and 305/35ZR20 sizes
of Pirelli's "Trofeo" tyre. The changes add up to a
total weight reduction of 65 kg and coupled to the
improvements to power through the ECU tuning, the Oakley
Design 458 Italia can now achieve 330 km/h (205 mph) and
make the dash from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in
3.0 seconds.
