Three years after its
market launch in Brazil the locally-built Punto has been
given a significant under-the-skin upgrade for the
"Model Year 2011", including new engines and
the addition of automatic Dualogic transmission, as well
as new interior finishes. The Brazilian market Punto,
built at Fiat Automóveis' Betim factory
in the Minas Gerais region, has won the local public's
affections thanks to its award-winning design, which is based
on the European Grand Punto bodystyle, the modernity of
the project and its new technologies.
Now the new range of the
Punto 2011 arrives on the Brazilian market bearing
several important new features: new versions and
						finishes, which transmit more elegance to the model;
particularly the option to fit the new automatic
Dualogic transmission for greater versatility and
comfort, and the new line of - reputedly - more modern and
efficient engines, Fiat Powertrain's abandoned "Tritec"
						project-based E.torQ
1.6 16V and 1.8 16V, both are Flex units (able to run at
any mix of gasoline and/ or ethanol).
						To offer the consumer
more choice, the Punto 2011 now comes in seven versions
with four types of engines and two types of
transmission, thus expanding the offering to be the
widest range in B-segment in Brazil. The new versions
						are the Essence 1.6 16V, Essence 1.8 16V, Essence 1.8
						16V Dualogic, Sporting 1.8 16V, Sporting 1.8 16V
Dualogic. Besides the entry version, there is the
						Attractive 1.4, and the range-topping T-Jet, equipped
						with 1.4 T-Jet turbo engine.
						The main change
implemented for Punto 2011 is the new family of engines
						under the bonnet: E.torQ 1.6 16V and E.torQ 1.8 16V.
Based on the former Chrysler/BMW "Tritec" joint venture
engine, they have been redeveloped and produced by FPT
in the JV's former, modern plant in Campo Largo, PR, and
these engines hope to ensure the Punto has excellent
performance and, as the new engine's name indicates,
driving pleasure being guaranteed thanks to elevated
torque, starting even at low rotations.
						E.torQ 1.6 16V Flex
has 117 hp of maximum power at 5,500 revolutions and
maximum torque at 16.8 kgfm at 4,500 rpm with ethanol
and 115 hp with torque of 16.2 kgfm when supplied with
						100% gasoline. Now E.torQ 1.8 16V comes with 132 hp at
5,250 rpm and torque of 18.9 kgfm at 4,500 revolutions
with ethanol (130 hp with 18.4 kgfm when supplied with
gasoline). The E.torQ 1.6 16V version, which equips the
new version, the Punto Essence, generates 13.55 kgfm,
that is, 81% of its maximum force: at 1,500 revolutions,
when supplied with ethanol. Immediately above this, at
						2,500 revolutions, E.torQ 1.6 16V has already reached
92% of its total force. This feature is also present in
E.torQ 1.8 16V, in the Essence and Sporting versions.
Immediately above 2,500 revolutions, the 1.8 16V version
presents elevated 17.50 kgfm of force, which represents
93% of the maximum torque with 100% ethanol, ensuring
						quicker acceleration.

The other major change under the skin to the Punto 2011
is the automatic Dualogic transmission in the Essence
						1.8 16V and Sporting 1.8 16V versions which enhance
comfort in this premium hatchback. With Dualogic
transmission, the driver can choose, at any time,
automatic or sequentially controlled gear shifts,
through controls on the shift stick. Besides this, the
change of driving mode, from automatic to manual, can be
done at any time, by displacing the stick to the left
(position D/M) for a time greater than 0.7 seconds. And,
even though the assembly may be in automatic mode, it is
still possible to perform shifts manually through the
stick, very useful option, for example, in overtaking.
						With the Dualogic
transmission the driver has even other benefits. For
example, activating the “S” key, located at the shift
stick side, the programming adopts sportive driving,
carrying out gear shifts at higher revolutions of the
engine, taking better advantage of the power and leaving
the vehicle with more sportive performance. In case of
overtakings or quick accelerations, Dualogic further
offers the kick down function. When the driver steps on
the accelerator all the way, the system reduces
automatically the gears prioritizing performance and
						resumption of speed.
						The Punto 2011
automatic Dualogic versions ensure the same performance
and fuel consumption levels as those versions with
manual transmission, that is, it is able to put together
performance and consumption of a model equipped with
manual transmission, with comfort of an automatic
						automobile.
						One of the most
award-winning automobiles in the history of Brazilian
industry, Punto is the fruit of a winning project, based
						on three important areas, design, safety and technology;
and so it continues to be an avant-garde automobile.
With lines signed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Punto has
redefined the "sports hatch" locally, bringing a
technological package only seen in models from higher
categories. Like, for example, the safety equipment that
carries up to six airbags, among them, window bags and
						side bags.
						The Punto 2011
receives some minor cosmetic modifications inside. The
new versions come with a white LED lighted instrument
panel and new internal fabrics, which in the Essence
versions come with the internal panel in different
colours: gray for the 1.6 16V version and brown for the
1.8 16V. All the new versions receive new wheels and
hubcaps, with exclusive designs for each of them.
						Another novelty is the
new radio system. Integrated into the panel it leaves
the automobile with an even more sophisticated look.
Further onboard technology includes the radio CD player
with MP3/WMA and RDS, offering further, as option,
Blue&Me with radio controls on the steering wheel and
USB connection. This system becomes complete with the
						short radio antenna.
						Fiat Punto 2011
arrives on the Brazilian market with seven versions
making up its new range. They are: Attractive 1.4,
						Essence 1.6 16V, Essence 1.8 16V, Essence 1.8 16V
						Dualogic, Sporting 1.8 16V, Sporting 1.8 16V Dualogic
						and T-Jet.

engine, the customer also gains in the original package
a central armrest for the driver’s seat, electric
external rearview mirrors and Swiss knife type key with
remote control for opening and closing of doors and
windows. The Essence 1.8 16V Dualogic also includes

radio controls and 16” light alloy wheels. The Essence
1.8 16V Dualogic also has dualogic transmission and
						cruise control.
The top of the line is
the T-Jet, equipped with the 1.4 litre turbo engine with
152 hp at 5,500 rpm and its standard components include
disc brakes on four wheels, sporty seats, black

with a one-year contractual factory guarantee with no
distance limit. And while the general guarantee is in
force the vehicle’s owner has right to 24 hour "Confiat"
assistance, which executes emergency services like
towing, mechanical aid and backup vehicle at any point
in Brazil. There are more than 500 Fiat points of
assistance, among dealers and assistance stations,
						spread all over the country.
