Fiat Automóveis has
unveiled first computer-generated 3D images that show
off the final outward appearance of its
ambitious "Fiat Mio" project, developed at its
Brazilian style centre, which is to be dubbed Fiat Concept Car
III (FCC III). It is the car manufacturer’s
interpretation of the many ideas that were posted by
internet users spread around the world on a dedicated
website.FCC III will be introduced at the 26th Salão Internacional do Automóvel, São Paulo, in October,
in Brazil. It follows on from two previous projects: FCC I (a concept off-road
sports-coupé) and FCC II (a concept "beach buggy") which
were developed in Brazil by Fiat Automóveis and
presented at the last two editions of Latin America's
most important motor show, which this year is
celebrating fifty years.
The model’s first 3D
images have been prepared by the virtual design team at the
Fiat Style Center for Latin America located at Betim in
Brazil. “The virtual work saves us time in the
prototype’s development. Our designers have much more
agility in giving life to the ideas of internet users
with this technology”, says Peter Fassbender, Manager of
Fiat Style Center for Latin America.
A compact, urban
vehicle, with media convergence and infotainment, easy
to park and with zero emission. These were the requests
of over 1.5 million people who visited a portal where consumers helped Fiat build
the Fiat Mio, an open innovation vehicle. The vehicle design was
then developed by a dedicated team of ten professionals
who interacted with the web users and had their final
work approved. There were over 10,000 registered ideas
taken from users from over 40 countries. The
technologies that are presented in FCC III were also
developed from chats on the project’s web portal.
The design line
that was selected in the end was dubbed "Precision" (it
came out ahead of the second final contender "Sense") which on the outside is characterised by a clean, minimalist and functional
design, where the large window area is a highlight. The
contrasts between the side, the window areas and the
rear, modular region, enable solidity. The dynamism of
the waistline helps to elongate visually the compact FCC III. On the front, one of the highlights is the sides
that advance on the bottom over the windshield “dome”,
which, along with the headlights, create an image of
strength. The wheels of the FCC III are covered by large
hubs that offer better aerodynamics to the car. On the
rear, the lights, as with the headlights, are positioned
behind the windows, bringing simplicity to the car shape
without missing the beauty that the look of the lights
and headlights give to the car.
Internally, the design
offers a new experience of use, inspired on a lounge, an
architectonic ambience, not on the common, expected on a
passenger car. Interfaces, information and entertainment
gadgets will be ergonomically accessible in another
scale. Inspired on the proposal that, on a future not so
distant, cars will communicate with smart roads, the
seats were inspired on sofas, and the steering wheel
gets new shapes and functions, starting to work as a
command center, closer to what the future consumers are
used to on current videogames. The internal design
proposal was selected to offer the most space possible
comfortably to up to two users. The lines are very
precise, aiming at a minimalist balance among them. The
vehicle dimensions are already defined: 1560 mm width,
1530 mm height and 2500 mm length.
