Artissima, Turin’s
contemporary art fair which opens today at the Lingotto
Fiere will host the preview of a special Fiat 500 given
a makeover by well known German artist Tobias Rehberger
who was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Bienniale
last year and was invited to participate in the project
“Luci d’Artista” with “My Noon”, a light installation
positioned in Piazza Castello in Turin.
The project, launched and promoted by Fondazione
Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and Fondazione Crescere Insieme
at the Sant’Anna Hospital, includes a public preview of
this unique car for the international collectors of
Artissima in November, and its subsequent auction sale
at Sotheby’s in 2011. Proceedings from the sale will be
donated to Azienda Ospedaliera Sant’Anna, Turin, where
8000 babies are born every year, for the purpose of
extending the premature babies unit of the neonatology
department, directed by Daniele Farina.
The Fiat 500 was donated by Fiat Automobiles, and will
be launched by patroness, Lavinia Elkann, who has
followed this benefit project ever since its inception.
The art direction was entrusted to Fondazione Sandretto
Re Rebaudengo, presided by Patrizia Sandretto Re
Rebaudengo.
The car that has been the icon of the Fiat brand has
changed its look as a result of Thomas Rehberger’s
intervention, which turned it into a unique piece. The
chassis, redesigned with entirely new lines and shapes,
will be unveiled on November 5th, looking like a
revolutionary, futuristic sculpture. Special colors and
a customized design will characterize this vehicle,
which has become an artwork sought after by the world’s
most important collectors. Inside the fair, the
sculpture will be placed in the institutional area,
right next to the multi-color cafe designed by
Rehberger.
Tobias Rehberger was born in 1966 in Esslingen, Germany.
He lives and works in Frankfurt. He debuted on the
international scene in the 90s and is currently one of
the most famous German artists. The art of Rehberger is
multi-faceted and multiform. The artist explores
different areas, ranging from architecture to design,
craft, cinema, music and fashion. Originating from his
critical attitude towards the object as a work of art,
his works blend form and function, creating a surprising
connection with the idea of home. His social projects -
interactive, utopian, and playful, are enriched by
casual connections and unexpected encounters with
different environments and social contexts.
Functional and, at the same time, visually sensual and
enigmatic, his works create a series of spaces where
visitors are encouraged to reconsider matters of taste
and think about their individual choices. Rehberger’
research also focuses on cinema and light, proving that
his work is constantly evolving. Regarded as one of the
most prominent artists on the contemporary scene today,
Tobias Rehberger has won the Golden Lion as best artist
in the Making Worlds exhibitions at the 53rd editon
(2009) of the International Art Exhibiton of the Venice
Biennale. Rehberger has already created projects related
to the car world, working on models by different car
producers.
